I’m honor of Davey on Rare Disease Day - ♥️
Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI) is a group of rare disorders affecting the connective tissue and characterized by extremely fragile bones that break or fracture easily (brittle bones), often without apparent cause. People who have OI are born with it. They either don't have enough collagen in their bones or have collagen that doesn't work as it should. This makes their bones weaker and more brittle than normal bones. It can also lead to bone deformities, the gene can be inherited or spontaneous.
(Davey is a spontaneous mutation)
While there isn’t a cure for OI, there are treatment options such as water therapy, surgery, and Pamidronate bone infusions.
Some clinical features of OI:
* Bone deformity and bone pain
* Short stature
* Spine curves
* Low bone density
* Hearing loss (present in more than 50% of people with OI)
* Brittle teeth, dentinogenesis imperfecta or DI, (present in 50% of people who have OI)
* Respiratory problems including asthma; may be aggravated by chest wall deformity and/or spine deformity
* Vision problems including myopia and risk for retinal detachment; tinted sclerae (seen in 50% of patients)
* Loose joints, ligament laxity and muscle weakness
* Skin hyperlaxity; easy bruising
* Cardiac issues including mitral valve laxity
* Fatigue
* Distinctive features of the skull include wormian bones (60%), late closing fontanels, and head circumference greater than average.
