Sepsis, is when your body has an extreme, life-threatening response to an infection.
People with sepsis say they feel very sick (the worst they have ever felt) and get sick very quickly.

Symptoms can include:
• fever or chills
• rapid heart rate
• difficulty breathing
• vomiting or diarrhoea
• confusion
• feeling more sleepy
• low or no urine
• a new rash.

If you feel unwell or are concerned, visit your doctor or call Healthdirect on 1800 022 222, even if you have already seen a doctor.

If you are very sick, go to a hospital emergency department or call Triple Zero (000). Don’t be afraid to ask “Could it be sepsis?”

The key thing to remember if you’ve been exposed to someone with COVID-19, is that they may be infectious for up to 10 days.

They’re most infectious for 2 days before their symptoms start and while they have acute symptoms such as runny nose, sore throat, cough and fever.

That’s why it’s important to think about the steps you can take to reduce the risk of spreading COVID-19 to others.

If you’re at higher risk of severe illness and have been around someone with COVID-19, speak to your doctor now so you know what to do if you get sick.

Has someone in your household tested positive for COVID-19? Here’s what you should do next.

If you have COVID-19 symptoms, you need to get tested.

If you test positive, self-isolate for 5 days. On day 5, if you still have acute symptoms, such as a sore throat, runny nose, cough or shortness of breath, remain in self-isolation for 7 days from the day you took your test.

If you have symptoms and you test negative, stay home until you do not have any symptoms.

If you don’t have any symptoms you do not need to self-isolate – but you must take steps to protect yourself and the people around you:
• Don’t visit high-risk settings (healthcare, aged care, disability care or correctional facilities)
• Work or study from home where practical
• Wear a mask when in indoor settings that are not your own home
• Avoid seeing people who are at high risk of severe illness
• Distance from your COVID-19 positive household member, if possible

For more info on what to do if you’re a household contact, visit: www.nsw.gov.au/covid-19/management/household-contacts

These everyday habits can help us stay COVID safe:

- Stay at home when you feel unwell
- Stay up to date with your COVID-19 vaccinations
- Wear a mask in crowded areas
- Keep up with good hand hygiene by washing your hands often for 20 seconds with soap and water, or use sanitiser when you can’t use soap and water
- Get together where there’s fresh air

From 6pm tonight, there are new rules for household and close contacts.

If you are a household or close contact and don’t have any symptoms, you do not need to self-isolate, but you must follow the Household and Close Contact Guidelines for 7 days from the last time someone in your household tested positive for COVID-19, or as otherwise directed by NSW Health:

• If you develop symptoms, you must self-isolate and get tested for COVID-19. If your test result is positive, you must isolate and follow the testing positive to COVID-19 advice. If your test result is negative, stay home until you do not have any symptoms.
• Do not visit high-risk settings (healthcare, aged care, disability care or correctional facilities) unless you require care yourself, or you have permission from the facility to visit for exceptional circumstances (e.g. end of life visits).
• Wear a mask when you are in an indoor setting that is not your own home, including workplaces and tertiary education. Schools may have their own guidance for students which should be followed.
• Work or study from home where possible. You must seek approval from your employer or education facility before returning to your workplace or school.
• Masks are also encouraged in your home to reduce the risk of transmission within your household.
• Avoid contact with people at higher risk of severe illness where possible.
• Avoid large or crowded indoor gatherings where you will be in contact with groups of people that you don’t live with, where possible.
• Consider taking a rapid antigen test if you do need to attend an indoor gathering, including your workplace or school, even if you do not have symptoms.

Recently had COVID-19 and been released from self-isolation?

You have a low risk of getting it again in the 12 weeks after your infection.

So if you’re exposed to someone who tests positive to COVID-19 within 12 weeks after you were released you do not need to test or self-isolate.

If it has been more than 12 weeks since you were released from self-isolation you need to test and self-isolate.

Recently recovered from COVID-19 but have been re-exposed to the virus?

If you’ve recovered from COVID-19 you have a low risk of getting it again in the 28 days after infection as, in most cases, your body develops some immunity to the virus.

However, you can become unwell with COVID-19 more than once. If you have symptoms and it has been more than 28 days since you recovered from COVID-19, you should get tested as you may have been re-infected.

If you’re re-exposed to COVID-19 within 28 days of recovering, you won’t need to self-isolate or get a test unless you have symptoms but after these 28 days, you will need to assess your personal risk, test, and self-isolate.

Vaccines continue to be our best defence in reducing the risk of infection and protecting against severe illness, hospitalisation and death. If you have fully recovered and are due for your vaccination, including a booster, you don’t need to delay, you can get your vaccination 4-6 weeks after recovery.

For individual advice, please speak to your GP.

If you’re taking a saliva rapid antigen test, do not eat, drink or brush your teeth for at least 30 minutes before putting the swab in your mouth.

Rapid antigen tests can be very accurate when used as instructed. However, food and drink can impact the accuracy of the result.

If testing before going to school or work, we recommend taking a test first thing in the morning, before eating, drinking or brushing your teeth.
