Homesick and Westbound

Vegan traveler and coffee lover always taking the long way or the hard way.

What is this? Only 8g of net carbs in this breakfast for dinner! Tofu Scramble with a bit of kale, keto bread(1g per slice x3), (1gx2 servings) bacon (>1g per 2 slices) maple syrup(1g x 2 servings). That’s it! Honestly this was more food than I wanted to ear, but I was already a little low on calories for the day so I went for it.

Slices of sky blaze through the skyline with the low-slung light in Northern Europe. Here, golden hour lasts all afternoon. When the sky is clear it is a photographer’s paradice. When it is overcast, it is opportunity, when we turn the word in our hands, examining it billions of facets for the glint of refracted beauty.

I walk. In forests covered in moss, over cool morning sand with the tide lapping my toes, crunching through the crust of a day-old snowfall, down cobblestone alleys with porticoed windows.

Without panes of glass or a motor’s hum or climate control I grasp that I am simultaneously separate and one with my surroundings. Both integral component and spectator.

The seed of travel sprouted in me around 2008. Shortly after I was enamored with the experience of transport in new places. Trains, trams, busses, bicycles, rickshaws. While I still love those experiences, I love walking even more. Especially as a photographer. Had I not decided to walk back from , I wouldn’t have had the perspective or opportunity to get these shots. I wouldn’t have walked in the sunny show shower so
so indicative of Swedish spring. I wouldn’t have felt the frigid sea spray blowing off the channel as I crossed the bridge. I would have missed the sun piercing the clouds as the snow dissipated as quickly as it arrived.

It’s a New Years tradition meant to bring luck in the new year to have Pork and Sauerkraut. and I have been keeping a vegan version of this tradition for years. Today we just sent one another photos of our plates to remain covid-safe in the new year. What are some New Year’s Day traditions that you share with friends and family? @ Yucaipa, California

As the miles fall away behind you, so do the immediate cares of the world: politics, covid, money. A clarity, settles over you, like a luminous blanket. There is an acute awareness of all that’s immediate, within the reach of your senses, and nothing more. Your days quickly align with the rhythms of the earth. You feel in closer union with everything. You feel whole.

What is the wildest improvised adventure you have been on?

Life often doesn’t go as planned. This was one of our test hikes for the John Muir Trail. We were due to start today.

Instead, fires are devastating California wilderness and all national forests have been closed. My heart hurts for all the animals who call the forests home. I’m sure the fires have already cost thousands of lives that will only be considered by few.

Being left at the altar, so to speak, we were twitching for some wilderness solitude and some healthy physical exertion.

This is the place where travel ends and adventure begins. We have packed bags and a very lose plan that looks like this:

1. Drive to Glacier National Park
2. 40km Canoe packing trip in the most remote lake on the Canadian border.
3. Glacier trek
4. Yellowstone
5. Grand Tetons
6. Use our JMT permit to climb Whitney if the fires are under control on our way back.
7. Canoe through the Havasu Wilderness and Lake Havasu on the way back if is up for it.

We don’t know how much, if any of this will work out, but we’ll keep on going.

I say this often, but you are not on an adventure until that’s start to go wrong. Before that you’re on a holiday.

Time’s Not Your Friend

I don’t want to give you all the tips and budget plans and packing lists. I want to inspire you to get out in the world and explore, and be in awe of its beauty, but also to grow by using your creativity to try new angles that take risks. You are not on an adventure until things start going wrong. Half the fun of travel is the confounding debacles you find yourself in, so get out there and get lost in a new city, or miss a flight because you met someone who made you lose track of time. Get food poisoning on a 36 hour bus ride. Get bed bugs and give them to your girlfriend. Snap blurry photos of surreal landscapes and photos of six people on a 110cc scooter with half of your thumb. An encyclopedic list of travel tips robs travel of all it’s adventure. If you want to really prepare, read Dave Eggers book, You Shall Know Our Velocity...or some of the stories you’ll find on my blog.
