Pretty âGinga Lynxâ entering through the famous Panama Canal by tugboats when the weather was clear and beautiful.
Panama Canal is an artificial, man-made waterway which is 82kms long (takes 8 to 10 hours to cross). It connects the Atlantic Ocean with Pacific Ocean. Via this canal, the merchant ships can carry goods more faster wasting months reducing cost of fuel and other expenses, though the average toll for every ship $54000 (sometimes it rises over $300000) .

Someone still thinks merchant mariners have to survive upon bread and butter; which is totally a misconception and the writings below with the pictures would clear it out.
Cuisines onboard the ship vary as per the different crewmembers and their Nationalities. The ships employing Multinationals may have a fixed continental cuisine, but crewmembers are always free to enjoy the food of their own choice. Food is one of the top priorities of shipping companies and they spend substantial amount of money for providing healthy and fresh food materials.
Food on ships is always maintained high in quality, one of the reasons that add up is also the various international conventions, regulations and frequent inspections that Merchant ships have to undergo at various ports across the world. Moreover while on shore across various countries you can enjoy a vast range cuisines, and live your all foody dreams!
The pictures here are just a mere hint of the type of regular food available (more or less same) on all vessels of merchant navy ships.
From January 1st, 2020, the new IMO (International Maritime Organization) 2020 Low Sulphur Regulation will be in effect in their MARPOL Convention. All sea-going vessels worldwide will have to comply and reduce their sulphur emissions by 85%.
To comply with the Regulation, sulphur in fuel oil must be reduced from 3.50% to 0.50%, in addition to the 0.10% sulphur limit already effective in the Emission Control Areas (ECA). This aims to reduce the amount of sulphur oxide emissions and should have major health and environmental benefits globally, including improving air quality and reducing risks of acidification of the oceans.
NEWS: Powerful explosion shattered tanker STOLT GROENLAND.
A huge blast has occurred on an oil tanker in a South Korean port, sparking a raging fire that spread to a nearby vessel and left 18 people injured.
All 25 of those on board the Cayman Islands-flagged tanker and the 21 people on the second ship have been rescued, according to the South Korean coast guard.
Twelve sailors and six rescue workers were injured, Yonhap news agency said, quoting local authorities. Nine of the injured were South Korean.
The Russian vice-consul in Busan said :
"There were no repairs or loading operations underway on the ship at the time of the explosion.
"It is obviously something in the cargo that caused the explosion and the fire."
CMA CGM group announced the the launching of the worldâs first and the largest ultra-large containership ( 23000 TEU ) which would be powered by Liquefied Natural Gas ( LNG ) .
The vesselâs name is â Jacques Saade â is -
â˘400 m in length and 61m width.
LNG reduces-
â˘Emissions of Sulfur Dioxide and fine particles by 99%
â˘Nitrogen Dioxide by upto 85%
â˘Carbon Dioxide by around 20%
This step of CMA CGM would also minimize the pollution of gases.

âMV ATBANâ, the VLCC (Very Large Crude Carrier) had been beached to Sitakunda Shipyard of Bangladesh for demolition/breaking.
â˘Ship belongs to a company of Saudi Arabia.
â˘LOA(Length Overall)-340 Meters (Length more than the height of Eiffel tower and that is more than a 90-storied building)
â˘Total Area- 19000 metre square (3-4 hours needed to roam around the whole vessel)
â˘Volume is 3 times more than a football stadium
â˘Age- 23 years old
â˘Draft- 22.5 metres ( after loading 300000 ton of oil)
The vessel was sold to a shipyard company of Sitakunda for 19 million dollars and govt. got a tax of about 2.2 million dollars. 400 workers have been employed to work for breaking the ship and it would take about 1 year. This is the biggest ship ever arrived to sitakunda shipyard according to the shipyard company.
Japanâs Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has decided to install augmented reality (AR) navigation systems on 21 MOL-operated very large crude oil carriers (VLCCs) following a two-ship test interval.
MOL also plans to install the system in its energy transport fleet including LNG carriers, as well as its dry bulkers to provide seafarers with greater support in watch-keeping and ship operation during voyages.
The Augmented Reality system integrates information from the Automatic Identification System (AIS) and radar with real-time video images from the bridge camera in collaboration with Furuno Electricâs cutting-edge Electric Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS) FMD3300 series. The system provides visual support to crewmembers during their watch-keeping and ship operations by using AR technology to superimposing real-time video imagery and voyage information.

The guideline below is for those who thinks each and every officer working onboard the ship are known as marine engineer, but this is not the case. There are two departments: Engineers and Nautical Officers;
Nautical science prepares a person to become a deck officer. Nautical officer deals with the safe navigation of ship, cargo operation, shipâs maintenance and management. The main courses of nautical studies are:
Seamanship,Chart work, Collision prevention, Navigation, Bridge Equipment & watch-keeping, Cargo handling & stowage, Ship stability, Elementary naval architecture, Meteorology, Marine signaling, Maintenance & operation of ships,Navigational Aid,Conventions and Laws and several modular courses that are required to join a ship are also included in the syllabus of nautical science which is mandatory as per the IMO STCW convention. At the very basic level, these courses are Personal Survival Techniques, Fire Fighting and Fire Prevention, Elementary First Aid, Personal Safety and Social Responsibility.
The rank of deck officers as per merchant navy are as follows:
Deck Cadet â Third Officer â Second Officer â Chief Officer â Master/Captain
Marine engineering is a field that deals with the engineering aspect of the maritime industry.Marine engineering is all about machinery on ships, boats, yachts, or any sea going vessels. It includes repairing, designing, operating and maintaining of ships and the equipment used in it including the technical site.
The subjects taught in the first and second year of the course are almost the same as those taught in conventional mechanical engineering. Those are :
Engineering General Knowledge, Engineering Knowledge of Motor, Electrotechnology, Naval Architecture and Ship Construction, Workshop processes, Applied Mechanics and heat, Pure Mathematics and physics, Mechanical Drawings.
The engineers also have to go through the above mentioned modules and short courses.
The ranks of Engineers as per merchant navy are as follows:
Engineer Cadet â Fourth Engineer â Third Engineer â Second Engineer â Chief Engineer
However, the salary structure of both engine and deck departments is almost the same nowadays. The Chief engineer has officers under him to maintain all the workings in the engine room and other associated work whereas the Chief Officer (under the complete purview of the Master/Captain) ensures the safe navigation and cargo operation of the vessel. Both departments are ultimately answerable to the Master as the Master has the final word.
90% of the worldâs trade is carried by the sea; and the heroes who works/contributes for this trade day and night, sacrificing their happiness, leaving their loved ones behind, are the SEAFARERS. This page has been formed to show love and respect towards the seafarers (backstage heroes).
The seafarers, you may send us your picture of yourself or anything else from onboard the ship or you may also send us your writings/words/emotions which you want to share with the world. We will modify your writings/pictures with animations, music aesthetically.
Seafarers, you would also get to know latest news of maritime industry and also studies of maritime science/engineering through some posts.
Thank you đ
