Earlier today Eyong Ebai, GM SSA and Marlon Burgess, Country Manager at GE Healthcare South Africa hosted a roundtable conversation with Healthcare UK on their experience in implementing a national health system.

Healthcare UK is a joint initiative of the UK’s National Health Service (NHS), The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) and the Department for International Trade (DIT), so they’re ideally placed to share the successes and failures of their healthcare journey with us as we prepare to launch the scheme in SA.

Some of the key learnings shared:

:
* The way we train, educate and upskill our healthcare workforce along with integrated workforce planning is critical for long term impact and a high-quality healthcare system.
* Create enablers that facilitate using the right skills at the right time for the right treatment.
* Help GPs to use clinical assistance.

:
* Digital medicine and the use of digital technologies like virtual consultations will result in huge cost savings.
* Innovation is not going to come from copying – it will come from learning and adapting to the local environment.

:
* Central procurement can work with the right structures and controls in place.
* Fast track infrastructure to reach people where they are.
* Separate chronic care from wellness.
* NHI implementation must be bespoke and needs to adapt regionally and locally.

:
* Partnering with academia to improve efficiencies to help the system cope with the lack of resources.
* Learn from and maximise the positives that came out of the private public partnerships that were forged during COVID.
* The pandemic highlighted that peer-to-peer partnerships across countries, across institutions and governments is key.
