Todays topic - Earthquake
The shaking of earth caused due to the release of energy which generate waves that travel.
Reason
The release of energy occurs along a fault
Fault is a sharp break in the crustal rock. Tend to move apart overcomes the friction, and block gets deformed and slide past each other abruptly. This cause release of energy
Focus or hypocenter
Point of release of energy beneath the crust(interior)
Epicenter
Nearest point of the focus on the surface of the earth
Two types of waves
1. Body waves
Released from the focus
Moves in all directions throughout the body of earth
Travel to surface of earth
2. Surface waves
Formed due to the interaction of body waves with surface rocks
Moves along the surface
Velocity differs with density of material they pass through
Refraction and reflection occurs
Most dangerous because of high amplitude
Vibrate perpendicular to the direction of the propagation in the vertical plane and creates troughs and crests
Body waves are of two types
1. P- wave (primary waves)
Starting from focus P waves moves faster and reach surface first
Similar to sound waves
Travel through gas, liquid and solid medium
Vibrate parallel to the direction of wave
Exerts pressure on the material in the direction of propagation
2. S -waves
Reaches surface with some time lag hence called secondary waves
Travel only through solid material
Used by scientists to study the structure of the interior of the earth
Refraction and reflection occurs
Vibrate perpendicular to the direction of the propagation
