Julian "Cannonball" Adderley was born on this day September 15, 1928 in Tampa, Florida. The great alto saxophonist only made one album as a leader for Blue Note, but 1958's "Somethin' Else" featuring Miles Davis, Hank Jones, Sam Jones & Art Blakey stands as one of the all-time jazz classics. Richard Rodgers is EGOT, an acronym for the Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Awards — the designation given to people who have won all four of those awards. Respectively, these awards honour outstanding achievements in television, recording, film, and Broadway theatre. Achieving the EGOT has been referred to as the "grand slam" of show business. As of 2022, 17 people have accomplished this feat. In addition, he was awarded a Pulitzer Prize, making him one of only two people to receive all five awards (Marvin Hamlisch is the other).

VALENSAMBA
A John Reid original. The principal motif here was conceived in a dream, imagined in the key of C, but “sung in the mind’s ear” in the key of B (!), where it was transcribed, moved up a fourth to key of E, then transposed to the originally imagined key of C, and also moved up a fourth to the key of F. The resulting composition is played sequentially through all four key centres.
