After the Ruhr Pocket's destruction would be the end of the war for the men of the 12. Volksgrenadier Division, of the few who survived. The division had suffered tremendous losses since those first days of fighting on the outskirts of Aachen. Those surviving the war to this point were either wounded that had been pulled from the front or more likely, now in a Prisoner of War camp and some may be among the masses in these few photos of prisoners from the Ruhr Pocket. For them, the war was over with a great deal of uncertainty thanks to years of N**i propaganda claiming the Allies would completely destroy Germany, for many these fears were probably on their minds.

On April 18, 1945, the Ruhr Pocket would finally surrender with 317,000 German soldiers being taken prisoner. The Ruhr Pocket would be the final fight for many famous divisions of World War II, including Lehr Division, the 116. Division, 2., and 3. fallschirmjäger division, and of course our division the 12. Volksgrenadier Division.

Another interesting period of interest for the unit is the first winter on the Eastern Front where veterans of the unit would have earned their Eastern Front Medal. Thanks to Lexikon Der Wehrmacht we can share positioning of the unit from November 1941 to April 1942, the period in which the award was earned.

In the comments below tell us what your favorite units to study were and what periods they fought in!

One of the most important parts of our unit is researching the history of our unit and figuring out the back stories of the unit with what the veterans would have survived. One of those major events is the Demjansk Pocket, which requires a lot of piecing together information, but one of the most useful sources is Lexikon Der Wehrmacht where we can find month-by-month maps of where the unit was positioned. the 12. Infanterie Division would play a very important part in the defense of Demjansk.
