If you're on the hunt for a unique and delicious culinary experience, head over to Galleria at Washington Square

They are now serving our pheasant again for a limited time 🌟 don't miss out on this farm-to-table experience!

How big is a pheasant? Here is your answer! The picture below is a mature female (known as a buff) that we released last weekend

11/05/2023

I'm just hanging out with my peeps...first batch is in the brooder and their flight feathers are already starting to come in on their wings if you look closely

08/05/2023

And just like that, we begin a new year at One-Eared Dog Farm. Did you know that a chick absorbs enough nutrients prior to hatch that it can last up to 48 hours before eating for the first time? No wonder we were able to receive our first batch in the mail!

21/04/2023

Did you know that pheasant eggs take 25 days to hatch once a pheasant begins to nest? Two batches in the incubator, 2023 chicks coming soon!

10/04/2023

Worth sharing lol...learn something new every day 😅

Agricultural lesson #1

So for those that don't know much about Bovines ie: Cows/Bulls and even Bison this is for you.

If you are not sure where baby cows come from, here is a Cows nest. As you can see the eggs in this particular nest are all white. Now white eggs generally mean that the cow being born will either be a beef cow or a dairy cow that will only produce white milk. But if the eggs are brown (Which is more rare) you will end up with a cow that is used solely for the production of chocolate milk.

The more you know.

With beautiful weather this weekend and more to come this week, spring is here!! With help from the pups, we cleaned out the flight pens yesterday as we prep for the new year. We have also begun collection for this year's first round of incubation! What spring project are you most excited to dig into?

After we got more (heavy) snow than expected Friday night, we woke up to one heck of a mess yesterday morning. Huge rips in the net of the big pen and rips around most of the outer posts. Birds are almost all good and moved earlier than expected to the breeder pen with a few missing but flying around the farm. Lesson learned? Spring is not here yet

LakeWind Natural Products sound familiar? 😅

Yup.

Read this recently in one of Joel Salatin's great books. Think outside the box and change up your approach when new problems arise! I can't begin to tell you how many times we have shifted our approach mid-project.

In case anyone else needed a laugh today. Farms are always more fun with a pup! One of ours is Bella, retired from Fighting Island

Important for both farms and homes. A good ratio of carbon knocks bad odors right out

Here’s how to layer an open pit compost pile to avoid pests, reach required temperatures for decomposition, and avoid bad odors. You can leave it as is to decompose on its own or turn every few weeks to speed up the process.

How to Build a Potato Tower - One Hundred Dollars a Month 25/02/2023

Well this is an interesting idea! Has anyone ever tried a different method than mounding potatoes in your garden?

How to Build a Potato Tower - One Hundred Dollars a Month Yesterday, Peanut the Easter Egger Chicken helped me build a potato tower.  This was the first tower I had ever built and I needed all the help I could get.  Since I’m trying to grow 2,000 lbs of fresh fruits and vegetables in my backyard this summer, I figured I should grow a few potatoes.  R...

Darren, why is there carpet on top of the posts to the flight pen? Well I'm glad you asked! We put strips of carpet on the edges of the posts to reduce rubbing on the net. Sharp wooden edges would quickly ruin the net, especially with the additional weight of snow and ice. Anything to extend the life of infrastructure!

to building our brooder barn! That was such a fun project, even amongst the delays we faced in building supplies at the time...six months! We just pivoted in year one and used a different space, but couldn't operate without it now

Lamb's quarters actually provides the vast majority of the cover for our flight pens. Maybe we wouldn't have fought it so hard in the garden if we knew it was similar to spinach. Have you tried any of these?

Always remember to forage responsibly, especially Ramps. 🌱🌱🌱🌱

I am so happy for my parents Larry-Elouise Messing as yesterday was the last day of cattle at Messing Farms. Much work has been done over the years, and this will provide some welcomed flexibility for them (and maybe a vacation or two?). I can't say enough about how important the cattle were to my childhood and how jealous I am that my brother Matt Messing made it home to see them go. I give it two years max before dad has some yard chickens or something of the sort 😉😂 once again so happy for them!
