It’s been a very warm welcome to Texas “Fall” 🎃☀️
We all know how it goes over here. First, there is fake Fall which happened a few weeks back when we could feel a chill in the air. Then, we have what I like to call “late summer”, with days in the upper 80°s and low 90°s. Until we start seeing temps under 65º (what’s that?!), a diet rich in cooling, bitter, and astringent foods is going to help bring balance to any excess heat we may have accumulated over the sweltering Summer months. I definitely have noticed more acne outbreaks in the past couple of weeks, which relates to elevated pitta dosha.
Some ideas for foods to explore: Oats, quinoa, white rice, lentils, fresh cheeses, chicken, coconut, leafy greens, artichokes, asparagus, sweet potato, carrots, butternut squash, summer squash, pumpkin, cherries, apples & pears (eaten as snacks away from other foods) to name a few. Cook with cooling and/or neutral oils like coconut, sunflower, or ghee.

Let your blood flow! 🌊
When we use tampons, they act as plugs to the flow of blood trying to exit our body. This can create stagnation, painful periods & feed imbalances. It can also mess with Apana Vayu, a sub dosha of Vāta in Āyurveda that is all about things being able to move down and out of our bodies. Aside from all of the recent news about tampons having toxins in them, they aren’t the best choice in the first place for womb/uterine health.

It is important to know when and when not to steam.
As a pelvic steam facilitator, this is the most important information to share so that everyone steams wisely.
I should not steam if:
❌ I am spotting or bleeding
❌ I have light pink blood (brown is okay)
❌ I am pregnant (37 weeks or less)
❌ I feel burning & itchiness in the pelvis
❌ I have had recent spontaneous bleeding
❌ Post-insemination when trying to conceive
❌ Post-Surgery
If you see changes in your cycle once you have started steaming regularly that aren’t bringing your cycle into balance*, reach out to a pelvic steam facilitator who can adjust your steam plan after an intake or (if needed) refer you out to a local acupuncturists or peristeam hydrotherapist who specialize in more individualized care for those who need it.

*Example of when you should schedule an intake or check in post intake: Someone with short cycles gets shorter cycles. Someone with long cycles gets longer cycles. Someone with heavy cycles has heavier cycles, someone with light flow experiences an even lighter flow. Someone with “normal” cycles experiences long/short cycles, etc.

At Healing Humxn, we honor and respect pelvic steaming and it’s robust history of being practiced. We acknowledge that it wasn’t always accessible or safe to share or practice pelvic steaming openly.
I (Savannah) provide steam guidance as an experiential practitioner which means I am not sharing this practice with ancestral knowledge as folk practitioners do, but rather from self practice, observation and experience. 🌿
