Para sa huling araw ng aming isang linggong implementasyon ng aming adbokasiya ukol sa elderly abuse, inihahandog namin ang isang maikling dokumentaryo na nagnanais makapamulat ng mga mata at kamalayan. Dito ay mapapag usapan ang paglaganap ng elderly abuse sa Pilipinas at sa buong mundo. Tatalakayin dito kung paano ito malulutas o maiiwasan bilang mga tagapag-alaga ng mga matatanda at kung paano ba natin sila matutulungan.

Ito man ang huli naming handog, pero hindi rito natatapos ang laban kontra abuso sa mga nakatatanda. Sana ay may natutunan kayo at maging tagapaglaganap tayong lahat ng mga mabubuting asal para kina Lolo at Lola dahil kabutihang asal din ang itinuro nila sa atin noong mga bata pa lamang tayo.

While we cannot deny that one’s physical functioning declines with age, one’s lifestyle can still make a huge difference.

With all the stigma associated with ageism, the preconceived notions and expectations about what an individual is supposed to be doing and what they are not supposed to be doing at a certain age, we tend to overlook the benefits of engaging in regular physical activity. And if our negative perceptions towards getting old persist, we are just further risking the extra time that we have ahead of us to be more productive and maintain a healthy mind and body. It is time to proactively challenge the ingrained assumptions and biases around age by being physically active!

"Ano ba yan, Lo! Ang tanda-tanda mo na, nakakahiya! Walang silbi."

Madaling bitawan ang mga salita, ngunit mahirap nang mabawi pa lalo na't kapag kasingtalas ng patalim ang sambit. Maaaring bumabaon na pala ang bawat talim ng salita nang hindi namamalayan. Ang emosyonal na pang-aabuso ay kasingsakit ng kahit ano pa mang klase ng abuso. Ang Emosyonal o Sikolohikal na Pang-aabuso ay tumutukoy sa berbal o di-berbal na kilos o salita na nagdudulot ng kalungkutan, sakit sa isip, takot, o pagkabalisa sa isang matanda. Batay sa pag-aaral sa 28 na bansa noong 2019, ito ay ang may pinakamaraming bilang na umaabot sa 11.6% ng elder abuse.

It is never too late to become physically active!

There are many factors that contribute as to why some elderly are convinced that exercise will not benefit them, however we should push past these perceived obstacles to fitness. People of any age and even those who have never been active can still participate and benefit from exercises and physical activities. These activities may include leisure time activities or in the context of your daily living such as walking, jogging, cycling, gardening or engaging in family play time. Incorporate physical activity into your daily life instead of making it a chore that must be done everyday.

Engaging in regular physical activity can significantly improve cardiorespiratory and muscular fitness, cognitive function and bone health. It also improves your mood and energy level, as well as helps you sleep better. So start being active now with us! Some physical activity is better than none.

Ang malnutrisyon ay nananatiling problema para sa ating mga lolo at lola. Kapag hindi ito naagapan kaagad, maaari itong magdulot ng pagkahina ng kanilang immune system, pagkahina ng mga muscle at kasukasuhan, at iba pang problema sa kanilang kalusugan.

Narito ang mga maari niyong gawin para ma-monitor ang kasulugan nila Lolo't Lola!
- Panatilihing tama lang ang bigat o timbang para makaiwas sa mga sakit na dulot ng obesity.
- Ang pag-eehersisyo ay makakatulong para palakasin ang kanilang mga buto at kasukasuan.
- Tignan kung ano ang mga kinakain nila para matukoy kung may sapat na sustansiya ba ito.
- Palaging tignan ang mga gamot na kanilang iniinom para malaman kung ito ba ang dahilan ng pagbaba o pagtaas ng kanilang timbang.
- Samahan sila tuwing umagahan, tanghalian o hapunan! Eto ay maaring makatulong para sila ay ganahan kumain.
- Hayaan silang tumulong sa paghahanda ng kanilang pagkain para sila ay mas ma-enganyong kumain ng mga masustansiyang pagkain.

“Tay, kulang ‘tong binigay mo ang mahal na ng mga bilihin ngayon!”

Ang pinansiyal na pang-aabuso ay ang iligal, hindi awtorisado, o hindi tamang paggamit ng pera, benepisyo, o pag-aari ng isang matanda ngunit hindi siya ang nakinabang. Pumapangalawa ito sa lahat ng uri ng elderly abuse at tinatayang nasa 6.8% ang nakararanas nito ayon sa isang pag-aaral noong 2019. Marami sa ating mga Lolo at Lola ay wala nang trabaho, ngunit madalas sa kanila pa rin umaasa ang buong pamilya. Dulot ng maraming bagay katulad ng pang-aabuso, nakapanlulumo sapagkat hindi lubos na nagagamit ng ibang mga matatanda ang kanilang mga pag-aari para sa kanilang sarili ngayong sila na ang nangangailangan. Hindi ba dapat panahon na para tayo naman ang magbigay ng sustento sa kanila?

Raising awareness is a responsibility that every health care professional holds.

With that comes along effective communication and proper assessments to recognize the patient’s knowledge about his/her medical condition and what he/she can do about it. So as health care workers, it is our obligation to educate ourselves about this matter in order to better explain to the patient all her options as well his/her benefits.

Previous evidence on exercise interventions in the older adults dealt with reversing age-related changes such as decreased oxygen consumption and muscle weakness. Researches were based on the knowledge that physiologic decline associated with aging were similar to those seen with physical inactivity and sedentary lifestyle that are reversible with enough exercise, which include reductions in functional capacity, changes in body composition, reduction of bone mass, muscle atrophy, generalized weakness, impaired balance, anxiety, and depression.

Increasing the physical activity levels and engagement of the elderly can be a challenging task. However, the overwhelming benefits of active ageing make it a worthwhile investment of time and resources.

Yoyo Villame did not lie when he said “Mag-exercise tayo tuwing umaga!”

Our bodies are designed to be used, and this becomes even more relevant as we get older. According to the Activity and Developmental Task Theory of Havighurst, Neugarten, & Tobin (1963), one needs to remain active, occupied, and involved to age successfully and live a satisfying late life. Activity is necessary to maintain life satisfaction and positive self-concept. As we age, the type of physical activities we may be concerned with are activities of daily living or being able to maintain our functional capacity to continue participation in the activities we enjoy doing.

The clock that keeps track of our years starts ticking the moment we are born. There is no escape to aging. But is there a way to increase our longevity? Activity may not add years to your life, but it will certainly add life to your golden years!

Ang malnutrition ay isang kondisyon kung saan sumosobra o nagkukulang sa mahahalagang nutrients ang katawan ng tao. Kadalasan ito ay dulot sa kakulangan sa ehersisyo o kaya naman kakulangan sa pagkain ng mga masustansyang pagkain.

Tatalakayin natin ngayon ang mga essential vitamins & minerals at ang mga pagkaing naglalaman nito na kailangan upang manatiling malusog ang katawan nila lolo at lola.

Babala: Ang susunod na mga pangungusap ay may sensitibong tema.

"Lola paisa lang, sige na parang di mo naman magugustuhan!”

Nakalulungkot isipin ngunit kahit sina Lolo at Lola ay hindi ligtas sa ganitong mga kataga sapagkat walang pinipili ang mga salarin ng sexual abuse. Ang sekswal na pang-aabuso ay sapilitang pakikipag-ugnayan sa anumang uri ng sekswal sa isang matanda. Halimbawa na lang ay ang penetrasyon o non-contact tulad ng sekswal na mga salita. Tinatayang nasa 0.9% na mga matatanda ang nakararanas ng sekswal na pang-aabuso.

As we age, we are more prone to get sick which leads us to more checkups and an increased hospital bill.

This is the reason why seniors are advised to take better care of themselves by paying attention to their diet, performing exercises suitable for their condition, and getting routine check-ups. However, for some, the amount of check-ups and hospital bills may be overwhelming, which is why R.A. 10645, the Mandatory PhilHealth Coverage for all Senior Citizens was implemented.

Tinatayang nasa 4.2% ng mga matatanda ang iniiwan mag-isa sa kanilang mga kabahayan o sa lansangan ayon sa mga pag-aaral. Kung hindi nila tayo pinabayaan nung mga musmos pa lamang tayo, paano naman sa yugtong ito ng kanilang buhay na sila naman ang nangangailangan ng pag-aaruga?

The benefits given to the senior citizens are like an indication of gratitude for their contribution in the country and their family. Because of this, the Republic Act No. 7432 as amended by Republic Act No. 9257 commonly known as The Expanded Senior Citizens Act of 2003 is further amended to Republic Act No. 9994 also known as The Expanded Senior Citizens Act of 2010. This act grants benefits and special privileges to every senior citizen. Unfortunately, not everyone is aware of it. To our lolos and lolas, here are the benefits and privileges that you can enjoy.

Ang kakulangan sa tama at balanseng nutrisyon o malnutrition ang isa sa mga pinakamabigat na problema sa mundo. Isa ito sa problemang madalas maranasan ng mga nakatatanda kung kaya't dapat itong bigyang pokus sa pagtaguyod ng kalusugan.

Upang lalong mapalalim ang ating kaalaman ukol dito, ating talakayin ang kahulugan ng malnutrisyon, at ang istatistika na nagsasabing ito ay lumalaking problema sa mga nakatatanda.

Kamusta na kaya sina Lolo at Lola ngayong quarantine?

Hindi natin namamalayan ngunit kasabay ng pagdami ng mga araw na tila isang pagpataw ng parusang kamatayan sa mga matatanda ang lumabas ng bahay dulot ng pandemya ay ang pagyabong din ng bilang ng kaso ng elderly abuse.

ANO ANG ELDERLY ABUSE?

Ang ELDERLY ABUSE ay ang karanasan ng mga matatanda kung saan sila ay pisikal na sinasaktan, sinisigawan, o kinukupitan. Maliban sa pisikal na pananakit, ang pag-aabuso rin ay nauuri rin sa sexual, pinansyal, emosyonal, at pagpapabaya.

Tunghayan ang mini-documentary ngayong ngayong Sabado upang malaman ang paglaganap ng elderly abuse sa Pilipinas at sa buong mundo at kung paano ito malulutas o maiiwasan bilang mga tagapag-alaga ng mga matatanda.

Are you aware that globally, millions of our elderly suffer from human rights violations every year?

In the Philippines, there are rarely records of physical and mental abuse among elderly people, however, this doesn’t mean that this problem doesn’t happen.

This can vary from discrimination to something serious as neglect, deprivation of health care, and abuse in nursing facilities and their homes. Mostly, a lot of these abuses go undocumented or “brushed- off” leaving the elderly victim deprived of his/her rights and the perpetrators unpunished (Human Rights Watch, 2020). With this, it is our responsibility to make sure that the rights of our elderly are not to be ignored hence it is important to take note of the rights of elderly to be aware and to inform ourselves.
