The events at the senate for the last 2days rubbed us with this sad reality too well. This wasn't infact a battle for the Merû governor alone but for all the Kenyan women. Oh, misogyny is the hatred for women for those who don't know. We see and experience it all the time in different forms-sometimes in offices, in families, on the roads when we're driving cars or Just in public places. There are men among us who still can't get to accept the empowerement of women, there are those who still belive women are mere s*x objects, the list is endless. Nowadays there are even policies in many offices against s*xual harassment. Sexual harassment doesn't have to be physical, sometimes it's emotional, suggestive comments and stares because most men even the learned ones have normalized this over the years. Sometimes ago I was parking a car at Limuru town when a random unkept man shouted at me, 'Madam you're too young for that car!' He looked high on something but I could tell he is a learned fellow, probably the type that end up in drug and substance abuse. I shouted back at him, 'Don't worry, I will still grow up for it.' I remember my niece Rosette who was with me laughing her heart out at the exchange, and I told her that when a woman is behind the wheels she gets all sorts of comments even from men who have never touched a car! Rosette is in form 2, still too young to understand chauvinism and misogyny. Anyway, watching the ugly videos by meru county's most honourable men hurling obscene insults at the most powerful woman - publicly and in broad daylight - made me wonder what ordinary women go through in that society. Am so proud of all the male legislatures who stood up for women last night, it gave some hope to the Kenyan women that there are still sober men around. Governor Kawira is the perfect epitome of the philosophical lyrics by Dolly Parton 'She Is Broken, But She Is An Eagle When She Flies!
