Last weekend on March 6th,7th and 8th we took 17 under 14 kortiro (girls) Huias to the 2020 Oceania Tag Tournament held at Bruce Pullman Park Takanini.

Day 1: Had the girls up bright and early to travel down to Bruce Pullman park, starting with our Karakea with the whole contingency, then we moved onto our opening ceremony.
Our first game was against New Zealand Barbarians 11.20am - was a tough game, girls faught hard but could secure the win and losing 9-5, then we played Nuie 1.20pm - these girls were lovely and a joy to play against, they put up a hard fight but our girls came out on top with a staggering 8-4 win, then up next was the Aotearoa Maoris Kortiro Tuis 3.20pm - this game was so intense watching. Back and fourth with tries and who was in the lead. But the girls played well and held off with a 5 all draw. When we played this team in the contingency day we lost by 1 point so to draw was extremely proud, then our final game against America Samoa 5.20pm, the girls faught hard, were extremely tired from 3 games already, but went out there and gave it there all, we lost (need to find score) but it was a tough game out there.

Day 2: our first game at 2.30pm against New Zealand Invitational White - who are the top team and showed us why, beating us 15-3 they put up a great fight, they pushed our girls hard, fast and to there limit. Then we played Cook Islands 4.30pm - A tough but really good game 7-4 loss to us but making the cook islands really push for that win. Then our final game 6.30pm Pasifica - this game started with our girls doing the haka accompanied with members from the under 16 and 18 boys teams. This sent chills down our spines and was amazing to see and watch, the girls had so.much fire in them they went on to leave this team score less and winning 9 nill.

Day 3: another early start for most 8am karakea then booting up to go and do the haka for 2 maoris teams , an under 12 girls and a under 10 boys team, so proud of these girls for doing that. Then then facednoff against Fiji in a shield game for 9th 10th place. The girls were neck and neck the entire game endinfnin a draw 5 all and going into overtime. Fiji got the first try in and took the win coming 9th.

We then had our contingency prizegiving for the kids in the under 8 to 14 teams. Girls got pizza, ice blocks and drinks and then medels and trophies.

We are so proud of these kids. They came 10th over all, played hard, had fun and became a whanau, majority of our team had never played Oceania before and we combined 3 diffrent team players into 1 team from girls aged 10 to 14. 17 girls total, 2 managers Pat Buxton and Pip Smythe and 1 coach Lisa Partridge

Thanks to all the parents for the commitments to trainings, contingency day and the tournament, bringing the girls out to all of these.

We look forward to taking more teams next year for the 2021 Oceania Tag Tournament.
