What is Hydrocephalus?
Hydrocephalus is a condition that affects the brain and how it functions. It can occur at any age but is more common in infants.

A clear, saltwater-like liquid called cerebro-spinal fluid (CSF) surrounds the brain. This fluid protects and nourishes the brain. It carries away waste from brain cells and contains important chemicals and nutrients.

Every day the brain produces about a pint of CSF which flows in a continuous circuit through the brain cavities (ventricles) and over the surface of the brain and spinal cord until it is absorbed by the body.

If the flow of CSF is blocked at any point, the fluid cannot drain away and will collect in the ventricles inside the brain. This causes them to swell which causes the surrounding tissue to stretch. This can also mean that the surface of the brain is pressed against the inside of the skull.

In babies and infants, the head will get bigger as the ventricles swell and increase the size of the brain. In older children and adults, the head size cannot increase, as the bones that form the skull are completely fused together.

What is Spina Bifida?
Spina Bifida is a fault in the spinal column in which one or more veterbrae (the bones which form the backbone) fail to form properly, leaving a gap or split, causing damage to the nervous system.

To help understand Spina Bifida in detail it is necessary to know the composition of the nervous system.

The Central Nervous System
The central nervous system and spine develop between the 14th and 23rd day after conception. It consists of the brain and the spinal cord. All activities are controlled by the brain which receives information from touching, seeing, feeling, tasting and hearing - responding to this information by initiating the appropriate movements of different parts of the body. Messages from the brain are carried to different parts of the body by the spinal cord which runs down the centre of the spinal column. This communication system for the body is very important and needs protection.

The Spine
The spine is made up of 33 bones or vertebrae. The vertebrae have two main functions. One is to provide anchorage for muscles so that we can move as messages from the brain are sent to those muscles. The other is to provide protection to the spinal cord.

The Neural Tube
The central nervous system and spine develops between the 14th and 23rd day after conception. Spina bifida occurs when the neural tube fails to close correctly. The vertebrae also fail to close in complete rings around the affected portion of the spinal cord. This leaves a gap at the back, involving one or more vertebrae. The fault may occur in one or more of the vertebrae but it is most common around waist-level.

Spina Bifida is one of a range of conditions all included under the umbrella term of "Neural Tube Defects"

Morning everyone. Just thought I would post a wee bit of info on what Spina Bifida is as a lot of people do not know.
Living with the condition isn't easy but things are made easier when you have friends and family who are there to support you when you're in times of need. Also having my little boy who doesn't have the condition at all helps you to fight the condition even harder. I manage to work part time, drive, have a child and get about with the use of splints and some help but I get on with it because you just have to 😂
This is just a little bit of info about it. Every condition ranges is so so many ways and affects people differently. No one person is the same!

So couldn't have just one winner for the free draw I've decided to have 2 cause I kinda went a bit mad in the shop and thought everyone has been too kind and deserves something in return. I've got the job of writing down all the names tomorrow and will draw the winner tomorrow at some point 😁

Not going to lie it has been stressful and worrying at times but I can not believe the outcome of it! So thank you so much to everyone. If I end up with anymore raffles I will pop them on but at the moment they are all sold out.

I do have the free raffle to put up but will do that over the weekend when I have bought the gift.

Also I have invited all my friends to join a new page to join for Usborne event that will be happening next weekend thanks to Hunters Bookshelf. Any orders made over next weekend will put 10% of the cost towards SBH also! If you would like to be added then please ask! More orders then the more money towards the charity! Perfect for Christmas or for birthdays etc next year! 💕

Also Lynn Brown for Hunters Bookshelf has kindly offered to set up an online event next weekend for anyone who is still looking for books for their little ones for Christmas or even birthdays next year.
