Neurodegenerative conditions often come with sleep disorders like insomnia, hypersomnia, sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome, circadian rhythm disorders, and rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder (a disorder where people act out their dreams). A preclinical model investigated the neurological and sleep effects of tangerine extracted by Co2 (tangerine Co2 aromatic, select). Subjects inhaled tangerine applied to cotton wool. The study found that tangerine altered electroencephalographic patterns, decreased REM sleep latency, and improved overall sleep quality. The findings suggest that inhaling tangerine could improve sleep quality in some neurodegenerative conditions.

Muscle fibrosis impairs muscle function, negatively affects muscle recovery and regeneration after injury, and increases susceptibility to re-injury. Topical application of shell ginger essential oil (31.0% para-cymene, 23.3% 1,8-cineole, 22.7% terpinen-4-ol) for 30 days improved muscle function and movement in a preclinical model of muscular fibrosis.

This oil is not currently commercially available, but its composition can be somewhat replicated by mixing equal parts of tea tree, eucalyptus, and thyme oils.

Pain and impaired blood pressure are common complaints following surgery. Aromatherapy is a leading solution to help control pain because essential oils trigger endorphin release in the brain, which promotes a general sense of well-being. A human clinical study evaluated the effects of inhaling bitter orange on pain and blood pressure following gastrectomy (partial or total removal of the stomach). After entering the postoperative recovery room and before receiving analgesic medications, five drops of bitter orange (diluted to 30%) were added to a pad placed about 5 cm from the nose and the participants inhaled for 10 breaths. The pad was then attached to the participant’s collar for 90 minutes. Participants in the control group inhaled distilled water from a pad. The aromatherapy group experienced significant reductions in blood pressure (systolic and diastolic) and pain intensity when compared to the control group.

Mycobacterium avium complex is a group of mycobacteria—M. avium, M. intracellulare, and M. gordonae—commonly found in food, water, and soil that infect humans. Nearly all humans have these bacteria in their bodies but those with a strong immune system don’t experience symptoms. However, those with weak or compromised immune systems can become very sick and experience respiratory diseases, high fever, abdominal pain, weight loss, diarrhea, fatigue, swollen glands, night sweats, and fewer red blood cells, or more serious symptoms like hepatitis, pneumonia, and blood infections. Of six essential oils tested (juniper berry, ylang ylang, sage, lavandin, bay laurel, and white cedar), juniper berry essential oil was the most active, significantly reducing cell viability of M. avium, M. intracellulare, and M. gordonae in laboratory research. The researchers concluded that juniper berry essential oil represents a promising alternative water disinfectant in hot water systems such as baths, swimming pools, spa pools, hot tubs, or even foot baths/whirlpools.

Anxiety following an operation or other invasive procedure is common and can delay postoperative healing and recovery and interfere with pain management. A placebo-controlled randomized human clinical study compared the effects of geranium and lemon essential oil for anxiety following coronary artery bypass. One hundred and fifty participants were randomly assigned to inhale geranium, lemon, or sweet almond oil (control group). Three drops of the various oils were placed onto a cloth pinned to the subject’s shirts approximately 20 cm from their nose. Subjects inhaled from the cloth for 20 minutes after surgery and state anxiety and physiological indices measured. Both the lemon and geranium oil groups experienced increased arterial blood oxygen saturation levels, but other indices (state anxiety scores, heart rate, and blood pressure) showed that geranium was superior to both lemon and control for decreasing overall anxiety state.https://cmja.arakmu.ac.ir/article-1-819-fa.pdf
