Attempts to ban books are rising at an unprecedented rate. These efforts are coordinated and happening all across Connecticut, and the United States.
Book bans are targeted. The most challenged books are written by or about the LGBTQIA community, or by about Black people, indigineous people, or people of color.
Why This Matters:
Books help us understand ourselves and the world around us. They help communities to build understanding about people and places that may not be readily accessible. When books are removed from classroom libraries, school libraries, or public libraries, the message is that the people represented in those books don’t have value. That message is incredibly harmful.
Parents can decide what their own children read. They do not have the right to make that decision for other people’s children.
From Unite Against Book Bans:
• Books are tools for understanding complex issues.
• Young people deserve to see themselves reflected in a library’s books.
• Parents should not be making decisions for other parents’ children.
• Individuals should be trusted to make their own decisions about what to read.
• Limiting young people’s access to books does not protect them from life’s complex and challenging issues.
