On Sunday, April 7th, the IACS Youth Board worked with Sawhorse Revolution on helping them build a community kitchen for the organization Hip Hop is Green. YBs learnt how to use power tools such as the pneumatic nailer and chop saw to frame the interior of the building, as well as cut, measure, and sand siding pieces. They also worked to paint the whole vertical farm!
Sawhorse Revolution is an organization with a mission to foster confident, community-oriented youth through the power of carpentry and craft. They team high school youth up with professional carpenters and architects to create needed community projects.
On March 23rd, a workshop on Peer and Youth Mental Health was held by IACS Youth Leadership, providing YB and YA participants with valuable insights and discussions.
The morning sessions facilitated by our partners: Youth Eastside Services, Harborview Trauma Ctr. (HATC), and Crisis Connections focused on stress, trauma, and su***de intervention.
In the afternoon, six culturally nuanced therapists engaged in table discussions with the youth, delving further into topics such as generational trauma and emotional regulation within the South Asian context. The workshop aimed to equip attendees with knowledge, tools, resources, resilience to combat stigma, prioritize self-care, and address the mental health needs of their community. Huge shout out to our partners and mental health specialists for their invaluable contributions. The MH Specialists are with People Bloom Counseling, Ik Aas Counseling, Right Your Story, Kids and Family Counseling , and Kahaani Therapy.
