Icing sprained ankles actually slows the healing process down!๐ŸคฏIf you want to optimize the healing process, movement is medicine. Find a movement you can do with relatively minimal pain (which at first may just be some ankle pumps and circles) and progressively increase movement/load as you can. The line โ€œwalk it offโ€ truly applies here as sitting and icing can delay the healing process.

I offer you one last piece of evidence. Every year a group of authors who are experts in the treatment of acute injuries gather and comb over the current scientific literature and establish position statements for the National Athletic Trainersโ€™ Association (NATA). In 2013, they released one such statement on the recommended treatment for ankle sprains (an injury commonly addressed with the RICE protocol).
After evaluating all of the available scientific literature on possible treatments for ankle sprains, they assigned ratings from best โ€œAโ€ to worst โ€œC.โ€ Do you know which rating icing got? A big fat โ€œC.โ€ They even wrote that โ€œstrong clinical evidence for advocating cryotherapy is limited.โ€
Do you know the treatments that were assigned a rating of โ€œAโ€? Functional rehabilitation! With this position statement, the profession that sees a majority of acute injuries among athletes acknowledged that icing is not as good as we all thought and rather the best form of treatment is moving and loading the injured area through rehabilitation exercise.

It's a glorious time of the year in the UK with spontaneous summer trips between heavy bouts of rain! ๐ŸŒž

The sunshine and warm weather is a great time to get out and about, boosting your physical and mental wellbeing!

If you plan to still train hard outdoors and have events coming up - please take note of the below to keep safe!!

๐Ÿ”ฅ Reduce the intensity slightly - if it's in the mid 20s, then this will immediately increase your heart rate as your body naturally tries to cool itself down - take this into account and reduces those hard runs

๐Ÿ’งHydrate - drink plenty of bloody water!! 2litres on a normal day but then 1 litre for every hour of exercise you do.

๐Ÿƒโ€โ™‚๏ธ If you're on a long run - take short water breaks in areas of shade. Don't tax your body on the run, it's already trying to deal with alot of stuff!

So many things can be taken from an injury.

Having a positive outlook to maximise the opportunity will make you so much stronger in the long run.

For me currently, dealing with knee pain, I'm focusing on single leg strength, knee stability and glute strength.

All three things that will have a positive effect on all other sports that I partake in.

๐ŸŒŸ The benefits of being mobile! ๐ŸŒŸ

I can treat the better half to a massage after a long week at work in an office based role.

Lots of sitting behind the desk causing alot of upper and lower back pain along with daily stresses that can be alleviated with hands on therapy.

Now, I don't push the message of relaxation or offer relaxing massages as I prefer the Sports/injury side but god damn, a chilled massage is so good for for your mental wellbeing.

YOU NEED TO READ THIS!

Who still runs for the ice when you deal with a sprain/strain etc?

Dr Gabe Mirkin coined the mnemonic RICE in 1978 which was then widely adopted and still advised today, however Dr Mirkin backtracked on this in 2015 to say that it may delay healing.

This is due to the body's built in reaction to inflame and flood the affected area with fluid and nutrients to protect and begin the recovery process. The cold sensation from ice slows this process down.

There's a few variations now available but I like the concept of PEACE & LOVE.

PEACE for Acute phases
LOVE for the rehab/recovery phase.

It's such a simple joint but has so many external factors that can cause pain, but these can all be alleviated or treated quite easily.

Be aware, REST IS NOT A TREATMENT!

It can be the beginning part of the recovery journey but there's always something that can be worked on, to get you back stronger! THATS THE END GOAL!
