Beach Hut People - Special Offer!

To celebrate the summer season we are selling Beach Hut People by Nancy Stevenson for a Bank Holiday seaside special offer of £10. Offer on from today until Saturday 31st August at The Nose. Come and pick up a copy a find out about our distinctive east coast beach huts. We published this book last summer and have sold over 700 copies so far.

Nancy Stevenson captures a unique slice of seaside culture by taking us on a journey in which we discover more about the people who inhabit these ‘sheds by the sea’. Beach Hut People takes us beyond the hut exteriors and uncovers the way of the beach hut community. Exploring traditions, changes, challenges and personal expression and style, Nancy shares her reflections on beach hut culture in this thoughtful and eloquent book. Based on conversations with 60 people who own or regularly visit beach huts, it is a collection of shared stories: experiences, routines, of things that people collect and display in their huts, and the way they choose to style them.

'A charming snapshot of a slice of the British seaside, the humble beach hut, their occupants, and a tiny corner of Essex serving here as a brilliant microcosm for a larger story about our island nation's idiosyncrasies’. -Travis Elborough

Getting ready for the 'Between the Tides Walton Arts Festival' planned for 20th -22nd September in Walton on the Naze. Follow the festival page to keep updated on events or visit the website here: waltonartsfestival.com

We’re off and it’s on!

It’s official, Between the Tides, Walton Arts Festival is on, with musicians being booked, artists exhibiting, writers writing, and teddy bears donning their parachutes.

From Friday to Sunday, September 20th-22nd, the town will be awash with fun and entertainment for children and adults ranging from poetry and storytelling to Jazz and Northern Soul.

It’s a weekend for everyone to come together and have a good time. There will be music in the pubs, activities on the beaches, art in the high street, and dancing in The Albion.

‘We have an amazing amount of talent in Walton and across Tendring,’ said one of the festival organisers Eleanor Brown, ‘Much of it goes unrecognised and unappreciated. We want to showcase local artists and musicians and show what they can do. At the same time, we want to encourage people to participate whether singing, dancing, or in an art or writing workshop

The festival is a way of creating waves in Walton and putting it back on the map by acknowledging how local groups and businesses are working hard to build on the sense of community. We have the Naze, great beaches, the pier and a revitalised town centre, but we also have many newcomers who should be both welcomed to the area and encouraged to participate in everything that is going on here.

‘From the sea cadets to the yacht club, from active churches to the youth centre and with special interest groups like the Sea Dipping Warriors, Tendring Community Writers and the Feel Good Choir, there is something for everyone. We just need to shout about it.’

There’s more happening in Walton than people think. The Festival is a showcase for all the arts,’ said Andrea Butcher, co-organiser of Soul on the Naze, ‘We’re holding our popular Soul night at The Albion’s Blue Room on the Saturday night of the festival, expect classic vinyl and dancing all night. Tickets on sale from August.’

Denise Parsons of vintage fashion store Dolly Daydreams Walton said, ‘It’s exciting that the whole town has an opportunity to come together with events for every age group and interest. We’re hosting a band with our neighbours Format Records bringing live music to the High Street of Walton.’

Walton is a special place, surrounded by water on three sides, the iconic Naze Tower celebrates its 20th anniversary this year of showcasing local artists and offering stunning views over Walton and the backwaters. On Sunday you’ll be able to see Classic Cars from the Frinton Gaskets, a kite display, a teddy bear parachute jump, as well as a special art exhibition in the Tower.

The growing programme for the festival can be found on https://www.waltonartsfestival.com

I was asked last night why The Nose is called The Nose and why the instagram name is . The Nose is named after the Naze in Walton-on-the-Naze which is the soft cliff and headland that sticks out into the North Sea and round into the Backwaters. Naze derives from Old English næss or ness, meaning a promontory, or headland. The French word for Nose is also Nez.

The Nose is a good name for this bookshop too as we stock a lot of books about finding out about things, and of course people come in for a nose and sit with their nose in a book. We sometimes write The nOse to give it a typographic nose. We are always on the look out for noses, often on the beach where we look for stone shape noses.

The Nose bookshop and cafe is open today from 10.30am until 5pm and then we have the monthly poetry evening from 5pm to 7pm tonight.

On a day when Walton has come together to remember those who fought against Fascism 80 years ago, the REFORM party are in our town canvassing.

On the home page of their website it says ‘Let’s stop this woke nonsense’ which could be translated as ‘Let’s stop the progression towards social and racial equality’.

The young people I spoke with today were excited to meet Farage, and told me that they didn’t ‘do’ politics, didn’t know what the different parties stood for, and that they weren’t going to vote.

Nearly everything in our daily lives is affected by politics and policy.

Here are the policies of the different parties:
Reform: https://www.reformparty.uk/
Labour: https://labour.org.uk/
Green https://greenparty.org.uk/
Conservative: https://www.conservatives.com/
Lib Dems: https://www.libdems.org.uk/

In Clacton our candidates are:
* Bensilum, Matthew (Liberal Democrats)
* Farage, Nigel Paul (Reform UK)
* Jamieson, Craig (Climate Party)
* Mack, Tony (Independent)
* Osben, Natasha (Green Party)
* Owusu-Nepaul, Jovan (Labour Party)
* Papanastasiou, Tasos (Heritage Party)
* Pemberton, Andrew (UKIP – NO to Illegal Immigration)
* Watling, Giles Francis (The Conservative Party Candidate)

Register to vote by the 18th June:
https://www.gov.uk/register-to-vote

And go out and vote on Thursday 4th of July and know who you are voting for and why.
