Ear infections are a common childhood occurrence for many children. When your little one wakes with a fever and pulls at their ears, we often run to the doctor for antibiotics. But is this necessary?
Is antibiotics the best or only way to treat ear infections? Ear infections are very common. Most children will have experienced at least one by the time they are five years old. Some children get them repeatedly, which is a top reason for doctorsโ visits yearly.
Not all earaches end up infected. Itโs possible to have fluid in the ear without pain/symptoms, which usually requires no treatment. A middle ear infection can be caused by bacteria or viruses and often resolves within 2 โ 3 days without any treatment. In general, ear infections are not serious, and don't always require a visit to the doctor. So, how does a parent treat ear infections at home?
1. Garlic-mullein oil: Use garlic-mullein oil (or just mullein oil) in the ear if the ear drum has not burst. Place a few drops in the ear, gently tug it to get it down, and let it sit for a few minutes. Then drain, and do on the other ear if needed.
2. Essential oils: Use Rosalina, lemon, or fir needle essential oils diluted to 0.5% and rub around the outside of the ear. Spearmint is also safe. These are for young children. Adults and kids over ten can also use eucalyptus, rosemary, or peppermint.
3. Anti-bacterial herbal teas: Drink warm mullein tea (1 tbsp. in 1 cup boiling water, sweetened as desired). Elderberry is also a good choice. Astragalus root is great for general immune support.
4. Warm salt socks: Fill a sock with natural salt, then warm it for a minute in the microwave (or about 10 โ 15 min. in the oven). Place this over the affected ear to help draw out the pain.
5. Chiropractic care: If more help is needed, chiropractic care may be beneficial.

Anxiety is a big topic...approximately 15% of people will experience it at some time in their lives, and it seems like it's more every year.
Figuring out anxiety is not an easy process. It's usually not a matter of just making one small change. Many people need to make various changes and try several different things to find what really works for them.
It also may take time to feel better, change as life circumstances change, and even be several 'layers' of different needs!
Studies have shown links between low levels of several key nutrients and anxiety or depression. Checking for possible deficiencies, improving food quality, and supplementing where necessary may decrease anxiety symptoms.
Vitamin D is a pre-hormone that supports the normal production of serotonin and other mood-related hormones. Low levels may interfere with this process and show up as anxiety or depression. But vitamin D is not the only nutrient involved. Vitamin C has been shown to decrease physical stress on the body, and chronic stress can lead to anxious symptoms. Several B vitamins have also been shown to help balance mood, especially B6 for women.
Beyond balancing nutrients, herbs are beneficial for anxiety. Lemon balm, lavender, and others benefit the nervous system, calming anxious feelings and making the body more capable of weathering stress.
If you have ongoing anxiety, it's best to talk to a naturopath or other natural health practitioner who can help you work through your specific needs. Looking at these nutrients and herbs is a great place to start.
