David Goggins (born February 17, 1975) is a retired United States Navy SEAL, American ultramarathon runner, ultra-distance cyclist, triathlete, public speaker, and author of his two memoirs who was inducted into the International Sports Hall of Fame for his achievements in sport. Goggins was also awarded the VFW Americanism award in 2018, one of the most prestigious awards that an individual can achieve for their service in the United States Armed Forces.

In 1981, he lived in Williamsville, New York, Paradise Road with his parents and brother, Trunnis Jr. While Goggins' neighborhood held "model citizens consisting of mainly white people", he describes his home experience as "hell on Earth". Goggins' father owned the roller skating rink Skateland, located in East Buffalo of New York. At age six, Goggins often worked the night shift at Skateland alongside his family, organizing roller skates. Hippocrates of Kos (c. 460 – c. 370 BC), also known as Hippocrates II, was a Greek physician of the classical period who is considered one of the most outstanding figures in the history of medicine. He is traditionally referred to as the "Father of Medicine" in recognition of his lasting contributions to the field, such as the use of prognosis and clinical observation, the systematic categorization of diseases, or the formulation of humoral theory. The Hippocratic school of medicine revolutionized ancient Greek medicine, establishing it as a discipline distinct from other fields with which it had traditionally been associated (theurgy and philosophy), thus establishing medicine as a profession.

However, the achievements of the writers of the Hippocratic Corpus, the practitioners of Hippocratic medicine, and the actions of Hippocrates himself were often conflated; thus very little is known about what Hippocrates actually thought, wrote, and did. Marcus Aurelius Antoninus (26 April 121 – 17 March 180) was Roman emperor from 161 to 180 AD and a Stoic philosopher. He was a member of the Nerva–Antonine dynasty, the last of the rulers known, but later, as the Five Good Emperors and the last emperor of the Pax Romana, an age of relative peace, calm, and stability for the Roman Empire lasting from 27 BC to 180 AD. He served as Roman consul in 140, 145, and 161.

Marcus Aurelius was born during the reign of Hadrian to the emperor's nephew, the praetor Marcus Annius Verus, and the heiress Domitia Calvilla. His father died when he was three, and he was raised by his mother and his paternal grandfather. George MacDonald (10 December 1824 – 18 September 1905) was a Scottish author, poet and Christian Congregational minister. He became a pioneering figure in the field of modern fantasy literature and the mentor of fellow-writer Lewis Carroll. John Fitzgerald Kennedy (May 29, 1917 – November 22, 1963), often referred to by his initials JFK and by the nickname Jack, was an American politician who served as the 35th president of the United States from 1961 until his assassination in 1963. He was the youngest person to assume the presidency by election and the youngest president at the end of his tenure. Laozi, also romanized as Lao Tzu and various other ways, was a semi-legendary ancient Chinese Taoist philosopher, credited with writing the Tao Te Ching. Laozi is a Chinese honorific, generally translated as "the Old Master". Although modern scholarship generally regards him as a fictional person, traditional accounts say he was born as Li Er in the state of Chu in the 6th century BC during China's Spring and Autumn Period, served as the royal archivist for the Zhou court at Wangcheng (modern Luoyang), met and impressed Confucius on one occasion, and composed the Tao Te Ching in a single session before retiring into the western wilderness.

For a huge chunk of my life, I've had these words stuck in my head, something I've said to myself repeatedly and have tried to live by.

Maybe these words have been stuck in my head because I'm sensitive to peoples actions, included my own, and a lot of people tend to say one thing, but do another. They make excuses about why "they can't", don't take action, complain, look for the short cut, but then wonder why they aren't getting the results they want. They want others around them to be better but don't take steps to better themselves. It's the classic "do as I say, not as I do" situation, and it would seems most people live this way.

How can you expect others to change when you won't change yourself?

I understand I'm likely coming across preachy right now, but I'm just speaking from what I have observed and experienced. I'm by no means perfect, not even close, I'm just a dude doing my best.

Wisdom tells us, the best way to change the world and others for the better, is to change yourself for the better and hope others catch on and want to come along for the ride.

This is the ripple effect, a single drop of water in a still pond can make waves.

So don't think that you being the best example you can be is a waste, because it is not. Be the change you want to see and your world will improve in ways you can't even imagine.

What do you want most?

No creditable quote source, but still a powerful quote, and I'm sure it's been said many times in many ways.

This could be discussed in length, but I think what this quote means to me is that we can either choose the moment, or we can choose the future. What we want now typically isn't what we want most. Because what we want most is in the future, it's not real, yet, and a lot of the time we choose the moment. So we can either sacrifice what we want most for what we want now, or sacrifice what we want now, for what we want most.

This can be a very complex topic, and of course a lot more nuance to it, because even choosing what we want now can serve what we want most. An interesting topic for discussion for sure.

Demosthenes (384 – 12 October 322 BC) was a Greek statesman and orator in ancient Athens. His orations constitute a significant expression of contemporary Athenian intellectual prowess and provide insight into the politics and culture of ancient Greece during the 4th century BC. Demosthenes learned rhetoric by studying the speeches of previous great orators. He delivered his first judicial speeches at the age of 20, in which he successfully argued that he should gain from his guardians what was left of his inheritance. For a time, Demosthenes made his living as a professional speechwriter (logographer) and a lawyer, writing speeches for use in private legal suits.

Demosthenes grew interested in politics during his time as a logographer, and in 354 BC he gave his first public political speeches.
