For many Indigenous people, Thanksgiving is a day of mourning. In a recent Washington Post article, Darius Coombs, a Mashpee Wampanoag cultural outreach coordinator, said there’s such misinterpretation about what Thanksgiving means to Indigenous people.

Reflecting on the first "Harvest Feast" in 1621 between the Wampanoags and European colonizers, Coombs said, "For us, Thanksgiving kicked off colonization. Our lives changed dramatically. It brought disease, servitude and so many things that weren’t good for Wampanoags and other Indigenous cultures.”

“Four hundred years later we’re still fighting for our land, our culture and our people,” said Brian Weeden, Mashpee Wampanoag council member.

Pt. 50 of In Defense of Socialism Series:

Ethical argument:

An often made accusation about socialism is that it is "immoral" and that it "robs from the rich to give to the poor" like a systematic Robin Hood. Stealing, theft or robbery is, after all, traditionally widely regarded as a sin or, at the very least, a transgression in a society where the "golden rule" is to "treat others as you would wish to be treated," while "greed" and "envy" are regarded as two of the "seven deadly sins." This comes from a fundamental misconception about the nature of both the current system of capitalism-imperialism and that of socialism. Socialism does "not rob from the rich to give to the poor" but rather takes back what the professional looters of the bourgeoisie/ capitalist class have taken from the proletariat/ working class for generations by way exploitation and oppression - they have exploited and robbed us of the true value of our labor while enriching themselves at a rate of often the equivalent to hundreds or even thousands of dollars per minute while workers earn a tiny fraction of that equivalent to several dollars per hour or a few dollars per day in developing countries (and while creating and propagating a fundamentally unequal and economically and racially unjust system and society). There is a reason why the capitalist class is often regard as "parasites" or "parasitic" by socialists and anarchists. Socialists seek to overthrow this fundamentally exploitative and oppressive system and replace it with a more equitable, just and democratic one. Workers, and the people generally, would have much more power not only in their own workplace, but in the economy as a whole, in government and in society, and they would also have a much more equitable share of the wealth generated from their work. Seizure of private property or the means of production may seem immoral or unethical to the untrained eye where capitalism-imperialism is the norm but this is truly dwarfed by the immorality of the exploitation, oppression and even murderous violence (especially towards marginalized peoples, countries under imperialist domination or war, and towards non-human animals) of both capitalism -imperialism and speciesism. Socialists seeking an actual revolution are not arguing for mass theft but rather overthrowing a system of mass exploitation, inequality, oppression and murder, attempting to undo the damage of that system, taking the power back on a mass scale and massive rebalancing and restructuring of the economy, government and society, in order to prevent further exploitation, inequality, oppression, and murder.

Also, personal property is preserved under both socialism and communism, and private property is preserved to a lesser extent under socialism but abolished under communism. Economic liberties are arguably advanced under socialism as the system is inherently more equitable and just and the capitalist imperialist system of exploitation and oppression will have been overthrown and replaced with socialism and social ownership of the means of production. The polity, government and economy would then be in the hands of the many rather than the hands of the few. Additionally, there's no inherent reason that animal liberation and socialist revolution have to be mutually exclusive (but they are also not automatically mutually inclusive as evidence by socialist revolutions of the past. While they made advances for marginalized/oppressed human groups, they did not make these same advances for animals. Exploiting and murdering animals for food and clothing (at least some of the time) was still the norm although it was no longer done for profit). However, socialism just as easily (and arguably) can and should be good for animal liberation. As I said before, the whole capitalist-imperialist system (of which Trump and fascism is merely a symptom) is a common enemy of both humanity and non-human animals. Speciesism and capitalism-imperialism are interlinked. They both rely on exploitation and oppression in order to generate personal material gains.

Another common misconception of socialism is that it somehow infringes, erases or takes away personal and/or economic rights or liberties. Contrary to this misconception about socialism, personal rights or liberties are very important, valued and protected under socialism (depending on the version of socialism in question). Also, personal property is preserved under both socialism and communism, and private property is preserved to a lesser extent under socialism but abolished under communism. Economic liberties are also arguably advanced under socialism as the system is inherently more equitable and just and the capitalist imperialist system of exploitation and oppression will have been overthrown and replaced with socialism and social ownership of the means of production. The polity, government and economy would then be in the hands of the many rather than the hands of the few. Additionally, there's no inherent reason that animal liberation and socialist revolution have to be mutually exclusive (but they are also not automatically mutually inclusive as evidence by socialist revolutions of the past. While they made advances for marginalized/oppressed human groups, they did not make similar advances for animals. Exploiting and murdering animals for food and clothing (at least some of the time) was still the norm although it was no longer done for private profit). The attitudes toward sentient non-human animals of socialist revolutions of the past had less to do with the system of socialism and more to do with the prevailing attitudes and cultures of the times and places in which these revolutions took place. It had much less to do with socialism itself and much more to do with ignorance and apathy toward the plight of non-human animals. Was the situation for non-human animals any better in the capitalist nations of the time? In a word, no. However, socialism just as easily (and arguably) can and should be good, if not better, for animal liberation, if animal liberation is instead made a core tenet of socialist revolution rather than ignored. From a theoretical point of view, capitalism-imperialism is arguably a "better" system in which speciesist relations can persist and be propagated (even if a plant based diet were to be widely adopted), whilst a form of socialism in which animal liberation is as essential to the revolution as is human emancipation, is a very poor soil for the propagation of the monstrous cruelty of animal agriculture

Pt. 48 of In Defense of Socialism Series:

Debunking animal rights arguments against socialism/communism and for capitalism-imperialism:

There's no inherent reason that animal liberation and socialist revolution have to be mutually exclusive. However, they are also not automatically mutually inclusive as evidence by socialist revolutions of the past. While they made advances for marginalized/oppressed human groups, they did not make these same advances for animals. Exploiting and murdering animals for food and clothing (at least some of the time) was still the norm although it was no longer done for profit. However, socialism just as easily (and arguably) can and should be good for animal liberation. The whole capitalist-imperialist system (of which Trump and fascism is merely a symptom) is a common enemy of both humanity and non-human animals. Speciesism and capitalism-imperialism are interlinked. They both rely on exploitation and oppression in order to generate private material gains. These days, many or most self-identifying socialists and communists are sympathetic to the "animal issue" and see capitalism as a destructive, oppressive and exploitative force to both humans and non-human animals. However, they usually only see the issue with an animal welfarist lens rather than calling for the radical abolition of animal agriculture and the radical liberation of all sentient non-human animals. While generally speaking we seek to break with that tradition, struggle with fellow radicals about this issue, emphasize the need to radically oppose and overthrow speciesism and make the case that this is a matter of the rights of sentient non-human animals, not merely a matter of their welfare, we aim to unite with other radicals and revolutionaries where unity can be found and forged.
