Great Central Railway

The first Railway's were built by the UK, in 1802 at Merthyr Tydfil. George and Robert Stephenson built the first steam powered passenger locomotive in 1825 on the Stockton and Darlington railway. This is the Great Central Railway and runs between Leicester and Loughborough. The railways were the beginning of the end for the canals. Numerous fossils and remains have been found in the Leicestershire area. One of the most famous is the Barrow Plesiosaurus found in a local quarry.
The remains of buffalo and woolly mammoths, as well as early humans and rhino dating back to the ice age have also been discovered. The fossils are now in Leicester museum or Charlwood museum. [email protected]
