Awesomeness with Abigail

Awesomeness with Abigail

I started this club in my middle school for my Girl Scout Silver Award.

It helps my peers to open up about their issues since they have trouble talking to adults they don't know and we can get them help.

Back to School

The other box went to the middle school, to help keep the club going. I am now in high school, where the club has expanded and is part of the Mental
Health Club. I am available to help at the middle school, high school and my dance studio since I helped spear head this as my Silver Award for Girl Scouts. Now into the Gold Award.

Eating Disorders.
There are several types. There are a few different kinds. If you, or a family member think you may have an eating disorder, then please speak with your doctor or healthcare provider. I have outlined the different kinds in my slide show that I presented to the club. You can see them below.

This topic is scary...su***de. I made sure I asked health care professionals and had them help me develop the slides for my presentation to the club that week. When it was discussed, I had adults there to help with this sensitive subject. I saw how sad it can be; a student from my brother's class committed su***de.

OCD
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
Do you know anyone that has OCD? I do, so does my mom. Ours is labeled more for "quirkiness", neither of ours has ever escalated towards a more serious issue or outcome. As you can see from my presentation to the club, sometimes it can be more serious.

Have you ever had a panic attack? Have you ever seen anyone having a panic attack? Did you know what to do? I spoke with medical professionals, looked up and read articles on Health Link to help me discuss this topic. I also made sure I had the school nurse and health advisor nearby as well.

Self isolation.
This can be hard. If you are new or shy it can be hard for you to break out of your shell. Make new friends, find your posse! Sometimes self isolation can be dangerous, as you can see from my slides that I created to discuss this topic during our club days. When I found students struggling I was able to make sure that we helped them to make friends and stay positive. We did ice breaker games to keep everyone talking and engaged.

Next topic....
Depression. Everyone at some point in their lives will have a feeling of depression. Know when to ask for help. Lots of kids my age go through this during puberty. It's hard and we all try to manage it as best as we can, talk to your parents, other family members or maybe someone at school or even one of your extracurricular activities, like a coach.
