Abstract
Culture Prime
"Amedeo Modigliani was the epitome of a tragic artist. Born to a bourgeois family in Italy, he later shunned his academic upbringing and willingly devolved into a poverty stricken vagabond. He was formally educated as a life painter in his teens, quickly developing a life-long infatuation with nudes. In 1902 he moved to Florence to study at the Academia di Belle Arti, at the “Free School of N**e Studies,” and a year later he moved to Venice as a fledgling artist, where he smoked hashish for the first time. It was only after he discovered narcotics that he developed the philosophical belief that the only path to creativity was through defiance of social norms and disorder in life. Thus began a life long affliction with corrupted beauty, which would ultimately end with his untimely death and the su***de of his grief-stricken wife and their unborn child."

BEYOND THE VISIBLE: HILMA AF KLINT - official US trailer
Hilma af Klint was an abstract artist before the term existed, she began even before Kandinsky; a visionary, trailblazing figure inspired by spiritualism, modern science, and the riches of the natural world around her.
Before Kandinsky, Mondrian, and Klee made a name for abstraction in visual art, another artist had already beat them to their discovery. But until very recen...

Known for his Cubist and abstract style, he was also a huge influence to the second generation of Op art artists, and all those related to geometrical abstractionism, with his colorful geometric figures. He co-founded the groups Abstraction-Création and Salon des Réalités Nouvelles which promoted non-figurative abstract art. Today, Auguste Herbin would celebrate his 138th anniversary!

Wassily Kandinsky - Blue Sky (1940)

Happy BIRTHDAY Karel Appel one of the founding fathers of CoBrA group and pioneer of the informal art movement.
The name CoBrA was taken from the first letters of the cities (Copenhagen, Brussels and Amsterdam) where the group members lived. However, they welcomed the coincidental reference to the snake, since animal imagery was common in CoBrA painting. As a group they had active social and political concerns. They held a major exhibition in 1949 at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam under the title International Experimental Art.
Founding members of CoBrA were Karel Appel, Asger Jorn and Constant Nieuwenhuys (known simply as Constant) and Ernest Mancoba. The group dissolved in the early 1950s.

Van Gogh used portrait painting as a method of introspection, a method to make money and a method of developing his skills as an artist.
When Van Gogh first began painting he used peasants as models. After this stage, he worked more on experimenting with his use of color in painting landscapes and flowers, primarily because he could not afford to pay models. He explains this in a letter to his sister Wilhelmina van Gogh in 1887,so Van Gogh painted his own portrait.
Why did Van Gogh make so many self-portraits? Watch the video and find out!
