Our History
Haynesville - Woodson High School History: 1927-1970 At the turn of the twentieth century, white supremacy prevented black schools from existing after the rudimentary level. As black churches were the center of our community, they began opening their doors to conduct classes for black students. With determination for equal education, blacks began to establish their own official educational institutions and erected small one room buildings to conduct classes for black students. The pursuit of education for young blacks was not an easy task. Blacks living in Haynesville had to travel outside of town to Minden or Grambling to graduate from high school. In order for some blacks to attend school, they had to stay in town with family or friends during the week, and for those who weren’t as fortunate eventually dropped out. Our school, originally named Haynesville Colored, was built in 1927. The school was built on twelve acres of land previously owned by Virge White and existed under segregationist laws. As Haynesville Colored was not initially a full fledge high school, it was expanded in 1933 and became Haynesville Colored High School, with the first class of six students graduating in 1937. Principal George “Professor” Tillis was Haynesville Colored High School’s first principal from 1933 to 1946. During this period, black students traveled to school the best way they could, as state transportation did not exist for black schools. The state did not provide a hot lunch program for black schools either; black students had to bring their own lunch to school. Haynesville Colored High School could not afford any extra-curricular activities for their students and teaching supplies, educational equipment, and textbooks were always second hand from local white schools, and Haynesville Colored’s wood frame building was no comparison to the brick building of the white schools. The second principal, J.E. Williams, served from 1946 to 1951. Under principal Williams, Haynesville Colored High School’s football team, the Tigers, was established in 1948. The Tigers won championships for twenty-two seasons. Winzer Turner was the Tigers first coach and alumni Dr. Norris Brown was the last coach before integration. Haynesville Colored High School was also blessed to have coaches Thomas Cooper, C. C. Coleman, Sterling Dyer, Donald Bankston, Thomas Bender, Lewis Underwood and Sidney Franklin, who were all dedicated to winning football games. The Tigers united Haynesville Colored High School with the community. Whether a home or away game, Friday night football was the main attraction for local black sports fans. Principal W. P. Adams was principal of Haynesville Colored High School from 1951 to 1953 followed by principal E. H. Dotson from 1953 to 1956. On May 2, 1954, the school was moved to a newly constructed brick facility facing Highway 79. School basketball was moved from an outdoor dirt court to an indoor gym with a cement floor. Also included in the new school complex were the Cafeteria, the Industrial Arts building, the Homemaking building, and football field. Keys to the new building were also given to Mr. Bill McGlotham, the first janitor of a black institution in Haynesville. The new Cafeteria allowed students to eat a hot free meal served by Ms. Eddie Mae Grisby and Mr. Cloteal Minson. Students living in rural areas that once walked to school were now picked up by a school bus. Principal T. J. Jones served as the last principal from 1956 to 1970 before integration. In the fall of 1959, Haynesville Colored High School official changed its name to Carter G. Woodson High School. At the end of segregation, Carter G. Woodson students were transferred to Haynesville High School in 1970, the former all white school. Carter G. Woodson became a Junior High school and is now the home of Haynesville Elementary School.
