My little blue car has become a little blue bookmobile this summer. Thanks to generous donors I have all kind of books for all kinds of readers, including books in Spanish.
I gave away lots of them to students during the last week of school to kickoff their summer reading, and I’m meeting up with students at Storytime in the Park events where they can get a free lunch, a copy of the Storytime book, and get some more books from me.
This is all part of my new Book Dragons reading club that I launched this summer and will continue into the school year. The other component is that students share their reading with me on a Padlet and the more they share, the more opportunities they have to earn brag tags, brand new high-interest books, and other prizes. It has been wonderful staying connecting with students, seeing their smiling faces and pictures of them reading with their pets or families, and seeing all the fun reading activities they’ve been doing.
Thank you again to everyone who has helped make this happen, whether you donated books, contributed to my Donors Choose campaign, or are a staff member who joined the club. 💖

PICTURE BOOK RECOMMENDATION: My Mother's Tongues: A Weaving of Languages, by 20-year-old Indian American author and Yale law student Uma Menon.
Uma was only 16 years old when she wrote this book, an ode to the power of multilingualism. In this story, the main character's mother can switch between Malayalam and English at the speed of sound. Sometimes, she speaks a combination of both.
With awe and curiosity, the young child recounts her mother’s migration from India and how she came to acquire two tongues, now woven together like fine cloth. Rahele Jomepour Bell’s inviting illustrations make playful use of visual metaphors. At the same time, Uma Menon’s lyrical text celebrates the gift of multilingualism.
