Nobel Prize Laureate Walther Bothe was born 131 years ago. This German nuclear physicist is widely known for his contributions to the method of coincidence, which is used to determine the lifespan of radiation.
In 1914, Bothe worked with German physicist Hans Geiger โ who created the radiation detection device called a Geiger Counter โ to develop the coincidence method. This method involves two Geiger counters to precisely detect the release of atomic particles or radiation and associate them with individual atomic reactions or events. By using this method to understand how radiation behaves, scientists can more effectively work with and harness radiation for peaceful uses, such as treating cancer and building and using nuclear reactors.
It was in 1954 that his collective work in nuclear physics as well as his role in establishing Germanyโs first cyclotron earned him half of the Nobel Prize in Physics, with the other half going to German physicist Max Born.

It's of , who was born in Heilbronn, Wรผrttemburg (now Germany), in 1814. Originally trained as a physician, he became interested in the mechanics and transfer of heat while serving aboard a ship.
His interest in the topic led him to become one of the first people to formulate the first law of that energy can neither be created nor destroyed in a closed system.
Von Mayer's work was initially overlooked because he was not versed in scientific writing, and the idea of the conservation of energy was not quickly accepted by many other scientists. He did later receive recognition for his work, including an honorary doctorate from the University of Tรผbingen.
