Sharing this important message from one of the staunch champions for Disability Equality in Education's landmark achievements which led to the passage of Disability Inclusive Curriculum. Now a message from State Rep. Joe Hohenstein:" And I’m so proud to say that we ensured that the Disability Inclusive Curriculum Pilot Program will have sources of funding that will allow it to continue to spread positivity and inclusiveness for years to come.

In 2022, we got approval of the pilot program for the Disability Inclusive Curriculum.

In 2023, we saw it implemented in 10 schools around the state.

In 2024, we are providing sufficient funding to expand the program sixfold so we can start to see the real impact an inclusive curriculum can have the lives of every student in a school.

Inclusion isn't just about kids with disabilities seeing themselves reflected in their classroom lessons. It's not just about them being empowered. It's about all the kids in a school learning that all their classmates have value, skills and gifts to bring to everyone.

I am proud to be a champion for full inclusion and the empowerment of all kids, no matter how they move in the world, how they sense the world, or how their brain processes all that world has to offer."Thanks Joe for supporting our School districts!

A Message from Theo Braddy: Something Should Be Said!

This may not be a popular message, but something should be said. Early in my career, working in this field, I learned something. It was very important to me to become an expert on certain topics. For example, when the ADA was enacted, I knew I had to become an expert on it, and I did. It served me well in those early years.

I remember learning this life lesson. I can’t remember who taught it, but it goes like this. If you always want to be employed, become an expert on something no one else wants to put in the time to learn.

Judy Heumann was right! Thanks in part to our Coalition good things are happening!

It happens over years of people joining together, strategizing, sharing and pulling all the levers they possibly can. Gradually, excruciatingly slowly, things start to happen, and then suddenly, seemingly out of the blue, something will tip."

In a joint statement today, the Departments of Education and Health and Human Services, announced an updated policy statement. It states that all young children with disabilities should have access to high-quality inclusive early childhood programs. The programs should provide individualized and appropriate support so children with disabilities can fully participate alongside their peers without disabilities, meet high expectations, and achieve their full potential. Ballot Questions #1

The Philadelphia Home Rule Charter is like the city's constitution, describing the overall structure of government. The Charter can be amended when City Council sends proposed changes to voters in the form of ballot questions. On the November ballot, there will be one proposed Charter amendment for voters to consider for a yes/no vote.

Question #1: Office for People with Disabilities

Ballot Question: Should the Philadelphia Home Rule Charter be amended to create an Office for People with Disabilities to coordinate the City’s compliance with requirements to provide access for people with disabilities to City services and programs and to otherwise provide for incorporation of the Office into the City government?

Plain English Statement: The City’s Home Rule Charter sets up the framework of City government. The Charter is the City’s constitution. An existing office that was created by the mayor, called the Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities, works to make City services and programs accessible for people with disabilities. That office could be eliminated at any time. If you vote “yes” on this ballot question, that means you approve of creating a more permanent Office for People with Disabilities in City government for the same purposes

Seventy says: According to its page on the city’s website, the Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities “advocates for policies, programs, and systemic changes that maximize independence and community integration for Philadelphians with disabilities
