“Room 8” ( 1947–1968 )
Room 8 was a neighborhood cat who wandered into a classroom in 1952 at Elysian Heights Elementary School in Echo Park, California. He lived in the school during the school year and then disappeared for the summer, returning when classes started again. This pattern continued without interruption until the mid-1960s.
News cameras would arrive at the school at the beginning of the year waiting for the cat's return; he became famous and would receive up to 100 letters a day addressed to him at the school. Eventually, he was featured in a documentary called Big Cat, Little Cat and a children's book, A Cat Called Room 8. Look magazine ran a three-page Room 8 feature by photographer Richard Hewett in November 1962, titled "Room 8: The School Cat". Leo Kottke wrote an instrumental called "Room 8" that was included in his 1971 album, Mudlark.
As he got older, Room 8 was injured in a cat fight and suffered from feline pneumonia, so a family near the school volunteered to take him in. The school's janitor would find him at the end of the school day and carry him across the street.
His obituary in the Los Angeles Times rivaled that of major political figures, running three columns with a photograph. The cat was so famous that his obituary ran in papers as far away as Hartford, Connecticut. The students raised the funds for his gravestone. He is buried at the Los Angeles Pet Memorial Park in Calabasas, California.
A coffee shop in Kent, UK. has made the brave decision to only serve customers who bring their own cup to the store, and to illustrate why they are doing this they filled their store floor with disposable cups.
Otto's Coffee House & Kitchen hopes its new policy will inspire other coffee shops to follow suit around the world.

This week we recognize Anthony Jennings & Crew Real Estate as the Washburn Chamber Member of the week. Even though owner, Anthony Jennings has been in the real estate business for over 30 years, the Crew will be celebrating their 2nd anniversary on March 27th. AJ&C was born of the love of the lake, local, and the opportunity to assist people in finding homes, land and business opportunities in this treasured area. Over the last two years his 12 employee Crew has become a second family. They continue to grow and add new faces consistently.
When asked what the most important thing they do at AJ&C is they said, “Home selling or buying is often a very emotional undertaking. For most people a home is the biggest purchase and investment they'll ever make. A home often symbolizes family, rest, and security, not just four walls and roof. We're able to provide objectivity and wisdom to help the process go as smoothly as possible.”
Supporting non-profits, and locally owned businesses, is of the utmost importance to them as well. They shop at the Chequamegon Co-op almost exclusively for groceries. They hosted a matching donation drive a month ago and were able to provide over $2,000.00 to the Chequamegon Humane Association, The Brick, New Day Shelter and BIRCH House, Men's Sober Living. They also sponsored a sweepstakes in December and February and awarded two local women $500.00 towards their rent or mortgage and car payment. “We're always looking for ways to support our area non-profits – even by jumping into frozen Lake Superior to raise money!”
So, what’s next for the Crew? Completion of the office renovations inside the beautiful and historic Platter Restaurant building, and growing the business so they can continue the cycle of giving and community connection. This includes researching a paint recycling center at their office location and sponsoring several more sweepstake package giveaways.
On Saturday, March 27th, from 11-1pm join the Crew as they celebrate their anniversary with an Egg Search. Every egg is a winner! Prize slips inside the hidden eggs will include prizes such as AJ&C wearables - zippered sweatshirts, t-shirts, hats and candy. Limit one egg per person.
To learn more about Anthony Jennings & Crew Real Estate and for more information on their events and community service projects, like and follow them on Facebook or log onto their website. From there you can see the rest of their 2021 sweepstakes packages and enter to win one for FREE!
Congratulations to Anthony Jennings & Crew Real Estate on their two years in business and all the amazing things they do for the community.

You know what to do!
Isabelle Moe, long time Washburn resident, will be turning 102 on March 16th. The amount of history she has witnessed in our community is mind blowing, and her involvement with homecoming runs long & deep.
To show her how much she means to Washburn, her friends have set a goal of getting 102 birthday cards sent to her for her birthday, one for every year of her life. If you would like to participate please send a card to Mrs. Moe at 220 West 3rd Street. Washburn, Wi. 54891. Or you can drop off cards at the new Chamber Office at 100 West Bayfield St. and we will get them delivered to her.
Let's help her celebrate!
"I'm old enough to get it, and I'm smart enough to get it," music legend Dolly Parton said as she received the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine in a video posted to her social media accounts on Tuesday. "I'm dead serious about the vaccine. I think we all want to get back to normal, whatever that is, and that would be a great shot in the arm, wouldn't it?" Parton also used the opportunity to sing to the tune of her hit song "Jolene" about the importance of getting vaccinated: "Vaccine, vaccine, vaccine, vaccine. I'm begging of you, please don't hesitate."
***
Parton's $1 million donation last year to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where she received the vaccine, helped fund the development of the Moderna vaccine. But the 75-year-old Grammy-winner also said back in early February that she did not want to get vaccinated until more Americans had gotten their shots first. "I don’t want it to look like I’m jumping the line just because I donated money," she told the AP. "I’m very funny about that."
***
Parton's vaccination comes as President Joe Biden announced that there will be enough coronavirus vaccines for all U.S. adults by the end of May — two months earlier than expected. "The prior administration had contracted for not nearly enough vaccine to cover adults in America. We rectified that," he said Tuesday at the White House. Courtesy: on Instagram
