Thank you to everyone who helped with the tree planting on October 28th!
Volunteers needed for Saturday's tree planting at Suttons Bay North Park. Trees arrived today, holes dug tomorrow. The trees are beautiful, join us for this community event. Sign up info.. below.
Please mark your calendars for Saturday, October 28th at 9 am.
With a grant from Releaf Michigan, through the DTE Foundation, Green Suttons Bay will be holding a tree planting event at North Park (where the farmers market is held) in the Village of Suttons Bay. The grant allowed us to purchase 20 trees (plus we purchased 5 more with funds from an anonymous donor). We need 40-50 volunteers to help place the trees and move compost and mulch (no hole digging required!).
We will have donuts, coffee and cider available for our wonderful volunteers, plus each person will receive a tree sapling to plant at home!
Below is the QR code to sign up for this event (be sure to select our date and location in the drop down menu). Preregistration is not required, but appreciated. Bring your family, neighbors and friends and help us continue to enhance our beautiful village!

Hi!
We hope that you had a wonderful summer and enjoyed all the beauty and delights Leelanau County has to offer!
While we took full advantage of our summer, we also worked hard to further the mission of Green Suttons Bay, including:
-Becoming affiliate members of Leelanau Energy
-Show Up, Pick Up events around the village to clean up litter.
-Work bees at our adopted rain garden to remove w**ds and trash.
-Weekly clean ups at the Eckerle Road recycle bins.
We are very excited to announce that Green Suttons Bay has been awarded a grant from Releaf Michigan through DTE Foundation Funding, to plant 20 trees in the Village of Suttons Bay!
ReLeaf Michigan is Michigan's only statewide tree planting non-profit organization, working with communities and organizations throughout Michigan to protect and restore our urban tree canopies. Founded by some of the most respected arborists in the state, ReLeaf Michigan plants the Right Tree in the Right Place at the Right Time to ensure each tree thrives for generations to come.
Please mark your calendars for Saturday, October 28th at 9 am. This is our scheduled date to install these 20 trees (plus 5 others that Green Suttons Bay was able to purchase with funds from an anonymous donor). We are required to have 40-50 volunteers to help place the trees and move compost and mulch (no hole digging required!). More information to follow, so stay tuned!
Thank you for your continued support of Green Suttons Bay and our mission!

We came, we saw, we conquered the w**ds!!
GREEN SUTTONS BAY would like to send out an enormous thank you to the amazing crew that helped us clean two Suttons Bay village rain gardens! In record time, this amazing group w**ded, trimmed and cleaned the two rain gardens on the corner of M22 and Adams Street. The bees and butterflies are already showing their appreciation! Stop by on your way to get an ice cream ;) and check it out.
Every small thing we do, benefits our community!

WE RECOMMEND
Postpone lawn cutting until June 1st. Pollinators emerge from underground searching for food. Early flowers like dandelion, clover, violets help fill the nutritional gap.
Refrain from spring clean-up until temps are above 50 degrees for 5 consecutive days. This protects native bees who nest under leaves and in fallen stems.
Avoid using insecticides, herbicides and fungicides. These chemicals kill and harm pollinators and the plants they forage.
Plant native plants. Even a small patch of native plants can greatly increase native bees
Coneflower, Black-Eyed Susan, Columbine, Lupine and Yarrow are easy to grow native plants for our area.

The Ice Hockey Rink Park in Suttons Bay
Greetings from Green Suttons Bay!
We have been busy since our inaugural community meeting and would like to share our progress and plans for upcoming events.
Progress:
We are working through steps to build our organization, including establishing our non-profit (501.c3) status, with the help of Larry Mawby.
We have connected with many local partners/collaborators who share and support our vision, including LIFT Teen Center and Saving Birds Thru Habitat.
At the June Village Council Meeting we introduced Green Suttons Bay and shared our mission statement. The village is updating the rain gardens and we have volunteered to adopt one to w**d, clean and maintain.
The first litter patrol event in the Village was a success, yielding almost 5 pounds of trash. We will begin having regular clean-up days, stay tuned!
We received many positive responses regarding โNo Mow Mayโ and are already working to expand interest for next spring.
