Caterina Cornaro, Venetian noblewoman, as Saint Catherine of Alexandria, 1542.

Caterina Cornaro, Queen of Cyprus, 1454-1510. In this posthumous portrait, she wears a red silk gown and a green overgown embroidered in yellow, quilted with gold and pearls. She also wears a jewelled crown with a turban and long white veil. In the background we see a wheel, the traditional attribute of St. Catherine of Alexandria.

The Isabella Breviary, 15th Century.
Christ entry into Jerusalem, followed by his disciples, has cloaks laid down before him as he approaches. Jerusalem is seen in the background and, on the border, two men climb acanthus foliage of silver-grey branches. Flowers, three birds and an ape are also seen along the border.

Faith, one of the 7 virtues. ✨ Her dress is inspired by the opulent ecclesiastical ornaments worn by priests. The gown features gold brocade and the collar is embellished with gold and precious stones. The hem of her bright blue and white robe is also encrusted in jewels and gold.

1. The mantle of the Archangel Gabriel features a tartar cloth pattern, a textile that made its way to Italy from the Mongol empire.
2. The end of the sleeve shows the angels name in gold, Gabriel.

Beatrice d’Este was known for her creation of new dress designs, which was one of her passions. She influenced many women throughout Milan and nearby cities with her way of dressing. She also started the trend of the Coazzone, which is the long braid she is seen wearing in the painting.
