The Golden Fleece Tom Roberts Shearing at Newstead Australian Art Postcard

The Golden Fleece, originally known as Shearing at Newstead, is an 1894 painting by the Australian artist Tom Roberts. The painting depicts sheep shearers plying their trade in a timber shearing shed at Newstead North, a sheep station near Inverell on the Northern Tablelands of New South Wales. The image depicted in the painting shows the inside of an active, timber, open-aired shearing shed in Newstead New South Wales. It depicts sixteen male shearers, and one young boy, who are featured at work in the shearing station using traditional hand clippers to shear the sheep. Even for its time, the method of using these steel edged clippers for shearing was rather traditional and slightly outdated because as of the late 1880s, machine shearers were becoming increasingly popular in Australian shearing sheds. The scene is crowded and busy, capturing the typical working day inside the shearing station, with the timber floors covered in shorn wool and sheep being held in various positions. It is currently on display at the Art Gallery of New South Wales.

My sister messaged me: I bought these for you, $2.50 at an auction. Hopefully, you still sell sports cards.

Yes, I sell trading cards. Wahoo! They're not as exciting to me to sell, compared to postcards because I'm not that into sports 🏀 🏈 I periodically check on how the MN teams are doing or certain players from other teams or the big games. However, I appreciate that it's important to others, and I try my best to list and sell to the best of my ability. I have a bunch of sports cards from the 90s that I've been listing.

Thank you sis for thinking of me at the auction!

Connecticut Electric Railway Trolley Museum Combo Car 10 Springfield Terminal VT Postcard

Car No.10 is a 40' 10" wooden combination car built by the Wason Manufacturing Co. of Springfield, Massachusetts in 1901 for the Springfield Electric Railway of Springfield, Vermont. It operated from Adnabrown Hotel in the center of Springfield, to the Boston & Maine Railroad (B&M) station in Charlestown, New Hampshire, following the Black River to the Connecticut River, crossing the latter on a company toll bridge. Car #10 carried mail and small freight to meet all B&M trains each day. This rail service played an important role in allowing many area young men and some women to leave and pursue higher education to make their way in the world, later to return on holidays or to just visit and "show off" new families. Many made their last return and final trip in caskets. During World War I the Springfield Electric Railway went into receivership and in 1921 was reorganized as the Springfield Terminal Railroad, which would later become part of the B&M. After World War II, the Springfield Terminal was to convert to diesel operation. Car No. 10 to was added as the second car to the Trolley Museum roster in 1947.

Cornish Windsor Covered Bridge Connecticut River Vermont Mt Ascutney Postcard

The Cornish–Windsor Covered Bridge is a 157-year-old, two-span, timber Town lattice-truss, interstate, covered bridge that crosses the Connecticut River between Cornish, New Hampshire (on the east), and Windsor, Vermont (on the west). Until 2008, when the Smolen–Gulf Bridge opened in Ohio, it had been the longest covered bridge (still standing) in the United States. The current bridge was built in 1866 by Bela Jenks Fletcher (1811–1877) of Claremont and James Frederick Tasker (1826–1903) of Cornish at a cost of $9,000 (equivalent to $187,282 in 2023). The bridge is approximately 449 feet long and 24 feet wide. The structure uses a lattice truss patented in 1820 and 1835 by Ithiel Town (1784–1844). From 1866 through 1943, it operated as a toll bridge. In 1866] It connected 'temperance' Windsor with 'wet' Cornish, so authorities asked 2 cents for foot travelers to enter New Hampshire but upped the fee to 3 cents for the return to dry Windsor.

Alfredo Di Lelio Il Vero Alfredo Ristorante Fettuccine Rome Italy Postcard

The legend of fettuccine Alfredo began in 1920 at a restaurant in Rome’s Centro Storico near the Tiber River. Alfredo Di Lelio opened Ristorante Alfredo in 1907, and in 1914 his wife felt ill after giving birth. He wanted to find something simple yet nutritious and filling for her. He hand made some fettuccine, the long flat noodles, and combined it with butter and parmesan. It worked. She felt great. So did every other patron who came in and tried it. In 1920, that included Douglas Fairbanks, the swashbuckling American actor who starred in The Mark of Zorro and Robin Hood. He brought his new bride, silent film star Mary Pickford, to Rome for their honeymoon and dined at Alfredo. They loved fettuccine Alfredo so much they returned to the U.S. and raved about it to all their Hollywood friends. Over the next 100-plus years, Hollywood celebrities have beaten a steady path to what is now called Alfredo alla Scrofa, named for the street where it sits. 🍝

Italian Comedians By Jean-Antoine Watteau, National Gallery Of Art - Washington, DC Postcard

Jean-Antoine Watteau’s The Italian Comedians presents fifteen figures arranged on stone steps and dressed in costumes typical of the commedia dell'arte theater. A troupe of actors gathers on stage to take a bow. They are dressed as stock characters from the commedia dell’arte, a form of slapstick theater popular in 18th-century France. All of the performers continue to play their parts, interacting and gesturing expressively — except Pierrot, the lovesick clown at the center. Dressed in shimmering white satin, he stands still, smiling slightly, his eyes unfocused. We can’t read his expression. An actor refusing to act, he is a mystery. Pierrot was a naive clown whose declarations of love were rejected by Flaminia, the heroine, placed to his left.

The Suitor's Visit by Ter Borch National Gallery of Art Postcard

Dutch seventeenth-century artist, Gerard ter Borch the Younger's painting technique consisted of delicate touches with the brush and the use of thin glazes to suggest transparencies, allowed him to create realistic textural effects, whether of lace, satin, or the pile of an oriental tablecloth. In this painting, an elegant gentleman bows gracefully as he enters the room. A young woman wearing a beautiful satin dress with an orange-red jacket stands to greet him while another woman plays a theorbo, a type of lute, at the table. Behind them a man warms his hands at the fireplace. The clothes, instruments, imposing mantelpiece, and gilded wallpaper all attest to the prosperity of the people. Ter Borch focused on the psychological interaction between the suitor and the standing woman, who communicate through glances and gestures.
