When Mariam wrote the song “Solace” in 2015, her (education & art) was in jeopardy: she was in the midst of an oppressive relationship and her inner colors and light were fading.

At first, the song was hers. A form of healing journal entry. Now, it’s yours to experience and share.

After recording Solace with Cordelia in 2020, filmmaker Marie Emmanuelle Thomas Hartness envisioned a beautiful movie to capture its emotions, messages, images, colors. The song video premiered today.

In the Fall of 2019, I took a proposal writing class for my dissertation proposal, and there I met Marie-Emmanuelle Hartness, a French-American HGSE student and movie-maker.
Being Moroccan and her French, we quickly bonded by speaking French in and out of class, and immediately started thinking of projects we could do together in Morocco.
None of what we had brainstormed ended up happening that year.
But, fast forward to mid-December 2020, I reached out to her on Facebook Messenger for her expert advice on how to go about creating a music video for my first single, Solace with Cordelia.
I thought she’d maybe give me a few pointers and leave it at that. Instead, Marie-Emmanuelle decided to form a team to create the most stunning movie I could have dreamed of for my song.
We worked around the pandemic, incorporated my bandmates who couldn’t be on set due to COVID, in a beautiful, touching way. Every time I watch the video, I notice new subtleties, new messages, that make this short movie a masterpiece.
I can’t wait for you all to see the result of a beautiful collaboration. As Marie expressed (swipe to read), it was flawless.
And yes, I did climb a tree to make her vision come true! 😅

The movie for Solace was made by a tiny but phenomenal team who braved COVID restrictions and the cold to make a vision come true. I’d like to introduce you to who was the director of photography for this project. 🎥📽
Sara’s professionalism was on point. I knew she loved her work when I saw how much time and effort she was willing to put into filming in the cold—if you haven’t been to Cambridge, it gets really cold in January! 🥶❄️
I’m so thankful to her for making look awesome, even if we couldn’t be together due to the sanitary restrictions.

Meet the don, the director for our forthcoming music video (dropping on Friday!), the one and only Nat Hoopes. recently graduated from Northwestern University with a degree in film and TV, and along with his passion for film, Nat is also a brilliant songwriter and music maker. His style immediately captivated us with his truly musical, psychedelic, thought provoking, and idiosyncratic approach to film-making and storytelling. Check out his most recent film “This is a Test” on Vimeo and his latest album “I Lost Myself” on Spotify.

Here’s what Nat had to say about the process of making the Creed video:

I wanted to capture the song in a synesthetic manner using color and manipulated image. I used stock footage, animations I created, and my own captured video. The video tells an abstract story following the melodic and lyrical journey of the song, incorporating the sounds of each instrument as they could possibly visually manifest themselves. I underscored the rhythms with synchronized editing and let the music itself guide the different chapters of the song.
