There will never be a time when I reach the end. Shibori keeps surprising me and I continue to develop new languages with the confidence of what is familiar: step by step, layer by layer, dialoguing with my material, watching it respond to my acts.

In traditional Japanese aesthetics, wabi-sabi is a world view centered on the acceptance of transience and imperfection. The aesthetic is sometimes described as one of appreciating beauty that is "imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete" in nature. It is prevalent throughout all forms of Japanese art.
Exploring simplicity, working in partnership with materials and their natural qualities.

I have been experimenting the combination between dip dyeing and immersion methods. That leads to some unique designs and allows me to work with colour combinations that I would not otherwise.

So much gratitude for the ones who value my work and send me sweet messages. The preciosity of having local clients that you can drive by to deliver an order!
I have been trying some new (to me) colour combinations. While I tend to not layer complementary colours if I don't aim for browns, I have been finding ways to do so in succesful manners. Complementary colours are so nice together!
Work in progress. Layers of shapes and layers of colours. Different shades resulting from the same bath based on what is underneath.
Lightweight organic cotton bandanas, they make nice neck or headscarves.

Welcome to my new page! My name is Mariana Frochtengarten. I am the artist and owner of Flow Shibori, a textile art company specialized mainly in Shibori fabric items for the body and the home. I have been working with textiles for almost 30 years and I am specifically fascinated by all forms of resist dyeing techniques. I have practised Batik for 17 consecutive years and slowly moved on to my own form and interpretation of Japanese Shibori.
I believe in the innovative and timeless aspects of traditional techniques and I feel inspired by the juxtaposition between the two worlds of ancient cultures and contemporary art. I am inspired by the richness of simplicity; designs that result from consecutive layers of colours and the combination of geometrical forms.
Throughout my career I have learned how to work in partnership with materials and I try to combine my initial creative plans with elements of chance and surprises that arise from the process. I look for the balance among controlling and letting go while creating. It is in this search for harmony between these two opposite forces that I create my work.
I am attracted to the tactile properties of fibres, as well as the idea of bringing beauty into our daily life. I attempt to create pieces that are pleasant and comfortable, carefully combining artisan quality and functionality all into one beautifully intertwined work of art!
