PRESIDENT’S CORNER: Let’s Support Copper Queens Dream Back-to-Back Olympic Appearance
Football felicitations to our beloved sports family. We are back this week with yet another package of our football dose that lays the ground for the next few days. This week is particularly exciting as the Copper Queens will be in Accra where they will play the Black Queens of Ghana in the first leg of the penultimate round of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
Having appeared at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics (played in 2021) there is a sense of belief that the Copper Queens may just update their historic feat by making a quick return to the Olympics. There has been a lot of positive drive with one of our players Rachael Kundananji in the spotlight for a mega move to the United States of America where she has signed for Bay FC. We are more excited that the move has not only marked a step higher in her career but thrust our beautiful country in the spotlight. We still bask in the glory of the historic back-to-back Olympic Games hat-tricks scored by Barbra Banda that served as one of the highlights of the Coper Queens debut appearance at the Olympic Games.
However, before we begin to dream of Olympic glory, we have to make sure that we prepare better for the back-to-back matches against Ghana. The home match at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium on February 28 will be yet another opportunity for fans to cheer the Copper Queens. On the preparatory part we have made sure ticket sales opened in good time and selling as low as K20 for the early birds across all Shoprite outlets. We are lucky that most of the foreign based players have joined camp early to give the technical bench enough room to prepare.
Away from the Copper Queens side of business, we were in Kasama to join the Northern Province football family during their Annual General Meeting. The provincial assemblies are a prelude to the national AGM that marks the highlight of our administrative calendar. Under the FAZ constitution which is has embraced decentralization the provinces hold own assemblies that set the tone for their participation at the national assembly. It was quite refreshing for us to sit in and listen in as delegates deliberated on various issues affecting the region. This is the kind of platform that football provides for feedback from the membership. We are particularly happy that the membership are now accustomed to utilizing conventional channels with the constitution to communicate their grievances.
Finally, CAF has announced that the draw for the 2025 AFCON will be held on Tuesday which will give us an idea of the qualification process. While Zambia will not participate in the preliminary rounds, we will be keeping our fingers crossed for the kind of route we will take. We have lined up possible engagements for the Chipolopolo during the March FIFA window as we keep our sights on the June back-to-back FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Tanzania and Morocco respectively. We have no doubt that the team will be in a position to give their best when they resume action next month and beyond.
Have a productive week!
