When we opened our COVID unit, which we named The Cove, back in April 2020, our team was sailing uncharted waters in long term care. We not only served our residents on this unit, but we also welcomed residents from our hospitals and community who were COVID positive. As we recovered nearly 70 residents, each recovery was celebrated. Although 2020 was undoubtedly one of the most challenging years of our lives, we were forever blessed to serve.

A big thank you to the Wayne County Health Department for making it possible for our staff to receive Covid vaccinations. Providing medical supplies to long-term care facilities is considered essential work and we are grateful to have this opportunity.

The first Covid vaccine in the U.S. was administered today at 9:23am in New York. Many of these vaccines are being shipped in the state of Michigan from the Pfizer Global Supply Kalamazoo manufacturing plant.

Healthcare workers and long term care residents will take priority for vaccine doses. It is great to see progress being made to protect our front line workers and elderly population!

“Operation Warp Speed” has released new information on the projected timeline and flow of vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna. See this newly released infographic to understand how the vaccine will be manufactured and distributed to healthcare facilities.

The Covid pandemic has sparked record level PPE demands for the healthcare industry. Medical suppliers have been overwhelmed with the task of sourcing products from new manufacturers, and making sure vital medical supplies remain in-stock. Most medical supplies rebounded, but gloves have not produced the same results.

TwinMed CEO David Blonder and previous Executive V.P. Meyer Greenbaum weighed in as to why gloves have had a difficult time bouncing back. “The barrier to entry is enormous,” Greenbaum explained. “The cost of one production line, which is a high-efficiency, double stack, automatic strip line — it can’t manufacture, if it’s running at full tilt, more than 27, to 30,000 cases a month. That’s 300,000 boxes. Now just some perspective: States, facilities, health systems, they’re ordering in the millions of boxes, in the tens of millions of boxes. This is just simply unprecedented.”

Gloves are historically also used more than other PPE products. Masks may be worn throughout the day, but gloves are changed after seeing every patient. These combined factors make it difficult for the glove supply chain to balance out.

FBI/HHS Warning – Fraudulent Glove Offers

A fraud scheme targeting the healthcare sector and utilizing a false FBI asset verification line to steal PII was recently detected by the FBI.

The FBI recommends the following proactive measures, which when paired with timely reporting to law enforcement, can help private sector organizations avoid becoming victims of PPE fraud schemes and mitigate potential financial loss or harm to personnel:

Avoid online sales of PPE referencing an FBI asset verification line.

When ordering PPE from online retailers, always verify the Uniform Resource Locator (URL) and confirm “https” in the web address, as a lack of a security certification (“https”) may be an indicator that the site is insecure or compromised.

If procuring other categories of PPE such as gowns, gloves, goggles, and face shields, directly consult the manufacturer to verify authenticity and availability.

Be wary of unprompted solicitations to purchase large quantities of PPE and do not respond by providing usernames, passwords, PII, or financial information.

Should a vendor of PPE or other critical resources claim FBI involvement in any form, or if you believe your organization was the victim of PPE-related fraudulent activity, please contact your local FBI Field Office and report details regarding this incident to the Internet Crimes Complaints Center.
