We’re two moms fed up with books getting banned from schools by a small group of “moms”

28/06/2024

For today’s “Freedom Friday”, we are remembering the Stonewall Riots which were a series of spontaneous, violent demonstrations by members of the LGBTQ+ community in response to a police raid that took place in the early morning hours of June 28, 1969, at the Stonewall Inn in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City. The riots are widely considered to be a turning point in the LGBTQ+ rights movement and are often cited as the catalyst for the modern fight for LGBTQ+ rights in the United States and around the world.🏳️‍🌈

🗒️ Trivia Tuesday🗒️

'The book from the Court of Thorns and Roses series that has been challenged and/or banned the most is "A Court of Mist and Fury". This installment in the series has faced challenges and controversy due to what some consider to be too mature or inappropriate for certain audiences. Despite the bans, the book continues to be popular among many readers.

We'll be discussing this book in an upcoming episode so make sure you follow **F4Books wherever you get your podcasts so you don't miss out.

🗓️ Trivia Tuesday 🗓️

Did you know Mona's 440 Club in San Francisco (ash tray featured in photo) was the first le***an bar, opening in 1936? 🌈💃 Much like the Telegraph Club in 's novel, these bars were vital sanctuaries where LGBTQ+ women could gather, celebrate identities, and spark activism.

Mona's, with its all-female staff and vibrant atmosphere, echoed the spirit of Lily Hu's journey in the novel—a quest for identity and community amidst societal challenges. 🏳️‍🌈✨ Sadly, like many historic bars, Mona's closed, reflecting broader changes in LGBTQ+ spaces.

Follow **F4Book 's wherever you get your podcasts to help Courtney and Jennifer celebrate the legacies of places like Mona's when they release their new episode covering "Last Night at the Telegraph Club". 💖 🥂🌟

This proclamation aimed to celebrate the contributions of the LGBTQ+ community and recognize the ongoing fight for equality and acceptance. Clinton's acknowledgment of the importance of pride month highlighted the need for continued support and advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights.

In this episode, we discuss the heartwarming book, Wishtree by Katherine Applegate. Told from the POV of a red oak tree, it’s chock full of scientific facts and adorable critters. The book is ultimately about kindness and community. Fun fact: red oak trees are monoecious! If you failed science this might be new info to you. If you’re ignorant you might think this is some trans agenda the woke left is pushing. We suggest you give the tin foil hat a break and take the time to read this book. We promise you won’t regret it.

We heard it’s National Puppy Day so we wanted to introduce you to our reading buddies and pups at heart: Maple and Dallas! Dogs make great reading companions and help kids improve their reading skills. If you don’t have a pup of your own (yet) you can check with your library as many have “paw to read” programs where kids can come read to one.

Florida teachers can discuss sexual orientation and gender ID under 'Don't Say Gay' bill settlement 11/03/2024

A 5 ⭐️ story we can’t wait to discuss on this week’s episode!

From the article:

The settlement also spells out that the law is neutral- meaning what applies to LGBTQ+ people also applies to heterosexual people - and that it doesn’t apply to library books not being used for instruction in the classroom.

The law also doesn’t apply to books with incidental references to LGBTQ+ characters or same-sex couples, “as they are not instruction on sexual orientation or gender identity any more than a math problem asking students to add bushels of apples is instruction on apple farming,” according to the settlement.”

Florida teachers can discuss sexual orientation and gender ID under 'Don't Say Gay' bill settlement Students and teachers will be able to speak freely about sexual orientation and gender identity in Florida classrooms, provided it's not part of instruction.
