Contrary to popular belief, any puppy having “papers” only proves who its parents are and that some sort of lineage can be shown. This should never be taken as a guarantee of good genetics, health, or behavior.

There are currently 67,019 puppies for sale on Puppies.com with more than 15,000 active breeder profiles. Most of those puppies are coming from breeders in Texas, California, Florida, Missouri and Kansas.

Our team is currently doing an audit of all of the breeders who sell through Puppies.com to determine if they hold the proper licensing for their state or federally so we can file all of the complaints. We will share a short list of some of the more concerning facilities that sell through this site as well. While that massive project will take time, we will continue to share pieces of information that we learn with you all!

Please do your part in helping us put an end to the cruel puppy mill industry by reminding your friends, family and coworkers that it is easier to find a puppy mill online than it is a responsible breeder. Do your research before you buy, read the inspection reports, read the reviews, visit the parent dogs in person and don't forget to reach out to your favorite researchers at Bailing Out Benji with any questions or concerns! Don't forget that there are amazing animals waiting for you at your local rescue or shelter too- including many purebred and made-up mixed breeds!

Bailing Out Benji is celebrating 13 years!

So far this year 2,000 animals have stayed with their families and OUT of our local shelters because of the work we do through our Ames Pet Food Pantry! This is amazing and not only helps so many families, but also helps keep our shelter numbers low!

We serve around 500 dogs, cats and small animals through our pantry each month! We have also helped cover the costs of humane euthanasias, spay/neuter surgeries, vaccines and more. We are also sponsoring a free microchip clinic this coming weekend in our community!

This part of our organization isn't on the forefront of what we do, but we would argue that this is some of the most meaningful work that we can be doing!

Many people do not know about the USDA dogs. There are an estimated 250,000 of them imprisioned in USDA breeding kennels. They are considered livestock and live in the same conditions.

Patricia Rockstroh is a cocker spaniel breeder in Jefferson County. She was inspected by the WI Dept of Ag in November 2023 due to a complaint in which dogs were "unvaccinated, matted, stinking and looking horrible."

During the visit, inspectors noted a dog with "multiple mats who was dirty with f***s and urine, four adult dogs housed in stacked wire crates which are designed to be collapsible and not stacked, along with a strong smell of ammonia present in the basement and throughout the household." A second inspection occurred on April 4th, where it was found conditions had not changed. This breeder operation is riddled with practices that aren't in the best interest of the animals or Patricia herself.

Bailing Out Benji has been following this case closely and has filed separate complaints with the USDA because the breeder is admittedly shipping animals as well as the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office and DA, due to cruelty and neglect.

Share and talk to friends and family...many puppy buyers never understand they are the why puppy mills exist.

Look at your dog and imagine them in a cage the size of their body. Living that way their whole life. This is legal in USDA licensed puppy mills. This is one of the many reasons to educate your friends/family to never buy a puppy online or in stores. The more you know the more dogs we save.....

Today there are 165,474 estimated number of adult dogs USDA facilities living their lives in cages to produce cute puppies.

Consumer fraud complaint alleges puppy-laundering scheme in Iowa • Iowa Capital Dispatch The Iowa attorney general has been asked to investigate an apparent puppy-laundering scheme documented by USDA inspectors.

The fact that Petland Largo charged $5000 for a mixed breed puppy is truly wild.

Putting all of the amazing adoption options aside (please always consider adoption first!), customers could go *directly* to breeders to buy puppies and have more peace of mind. Not only do breeders charge much less than pet store prices, but the customers would be able to meet the parent dogs and the siblings to make sure everyone is being cared for.

To put it into perspective for you: We have sale records that show puppies being sold by breeders to brokers (then later to stores) for $150-$300 a piece. The stores then charge THOUSANDS of dollars in order to sell the consumer a lie that the puppy comes from the best of the best facilities. Every step of the process is set up to hide the truth from the customer, while squeezing as much money as possible out of them. All while the parent dogs back at the puppy mill continue suffering without any of the profits going back to their care.
