As dental professionals, musculoskeletal complications (MSC) are an occupational hazard we can’t ignore. With over 48 million Americans suffering from issues related to workplace strains, it’s essential we address this head-on in our community. Today, I’m sharing a snippet of my acupuncture session, a powerful tool in my wellness toolkit! This isn’t just about pain relief—it’s about reclaiming my career longevity and ensuring I can continue to provide the best care for my patients. Acupuncture, combined with hand therapy, has been transformative. It’s more than just treatment; it’s about preventative care, allowing us to handle the daily clinical demands without compromise. We need to invest time in taking care of ourselves in order to allow us to take care of our patients!

What a first experience with Paperplane Therapeutics Virtual Reality! I used it today on my first patient during an extraction and it made a HUGE difference!! To see how my patients mind was busy focusing on playing a video game and/pr enjoying the scenery of a beautiful beach while I was able to perform my procedure with significantly less interruption and patient anxiety makes this a total no brainer for me moving forward! So many of our patients come in anxious for their procedures and numbing process; to be able to provide such a simple and effective solution is a win for my patient and for my practice!

A forever memorable final 2 days of the @sepaprofessional conference in Bilbao, Spain. Truly one of the highest quality, best organized, and most influential conferences I have yet to attend, and I feel so grateful for the opportunity to have been selected as a presenter. Over 4,500 attendees and some of the most elite global minds combined with great night activities and the chance to build new friendships truly made the entire event a massive success. To my dear friend of 20 years and President of Sepa, @josenart I tip my cap and say job incredibly well done, along with the entire Sepa executive committee for all the hard work and organization they put into building the event. I can’t wait until the next version in November 2025 in Barcelona; see you there!

Repost from @sepaprofessional - day 1 was a success! —- Sepa Bilbao ‘24 kicked off with an impressive live surgery led by world-renowned expert Dr. Luca de Stavola, sparking immense interest among the 4,000+ attendees. The event features a dynamic scientific program, including live surgeries by Dr. de Stavola and other leading professionals, symposiums on periodontal health, interdisciplinary approaches, and more. ExpoPerio boasts full capacity, occupying all planned trade show space with over 70 participating companies.

Day 1 of #sepabilbao24 was a success! Looking forward to the next few days of education and networking!

Congrats to the class of 2024 on their amazing accomplishment! Such a privilege to have watched each of you grow and mature into the incredible professionals you are, and no doubt you will each succeed above and beyond your greatest expectations! Best of luck and a job well done!

Following up on my video series covering surgical extractions via an atraumatic technique, in closing we are discussing regenerative materials. Regenerative material can now be placed into the sockets. While material choice can vary on numerous factors, the goals of epithelial exclusion and space maintenance are still essential for proper regeneration and long term functional and esthetic outcomes. A bone carrier from PDT facilitates the placement of the graft into the socket site. A collagen membrane and/or plug can be used depending on the clinical situation, maintenance of bony walls, and long term goals for the treated site. If you missed the first part of the series, check out my page for more info!

Following up on my video series about surgical extractions via an atraumatic technique, today we are covering proper removal. Often overlooked, cleaning the extraction socket with curettes is an important part of dealing with infections. Proper removal can be tedious and time consuming, and often the curettes may not access the sites or remove the infection adequately. This is where the Slade Blade from PDT instruments makes a big difference; the curettes have serrations on their tip, greatly facilitating the removal of granulation tissue and saving time and energy. More videos coming soon on the removal process, instrumentation, final results, and more- check out my page if you missed the first few videos of the series!

Surgical Extractions (via an atraumatic technique) Part 4: Traditional forceps and elevators can still be applied, but now in a less traumatic way to the bone. Rather than applying force in a buccal-lingual direction and risking damaging/breaking the buccal plate, our individual roots can be removed via a rotational movement. Part 5 coming soon to cover cleaning the extraction socket to help prevent infections. Check out my page to see videos 1 - 3 on the removal process, instrumentation, final results, and more.

To continue in our surgical extractions (via an atraumatic technique) series, today we are covering the instrumentation used. Surgical instrumentation is critical to our atraumatic technique, and the use of periotomes and x-otomes can dramatically improve our precision in removing broken-down teeth, especially those with decay and prior RCT therapy. The x-otomes (from A-Titan) come in different angles to custom fit different areas in the mouth and can be used similarly to traditional elevators but result in less stress placed on the bone and an ability to avoid damaging the buccal plate. In many situations such as is, the exotomes alone can extract the root. More videos coming soon on the removal process, instrumentation, final results, and more- check out my page if you missed videos 1 & 2 of the series!

Following up on my video yesterday about surgical extractions via an atraumatic technique, today we are covering teeth with multiple roots. First section the tooth into individual roots, preferably with an electric handpiece (from NSK) given the significant torque and consistent power provided. This can save time and musculoskeletal wear on our hands over time, especially when cutting through crowns and bridges. In this case, the natural tooth structure was divided into its two roots (using a NSK Z95L electric handpiece). More videos coming soon on the removal process, instrumentation, final results, and more- check out my page if you missed video one of the series. ___ Background: Surgical extractions via an atraumatic technique is essential to retaining the maximum amount of bone for functional and esthetic outcomes. Studies have proven that significant vertical and horizontal changes occur to the bone over two phases of healing and can result in as high as a 50% loss of total volume. Therefore, the combination of an atraumatic technique with the use of regenerative materials play a major role in minimizing the changes that occur.

In case you missed it: Check out episode 455 of the DentalTalk Podcast hosted by Dr. Phil Klein as we shed light on a crucial topic: challenges in patient financing. The modern dental professional is better prepared to diagnose and execute complex cases today than ever before, yet one major hurdle remains unchanged: the patient's financial ability to accept treatment. In this episode we discuss the flaws with financing and how practices are modernizing their approach with a new technology that expands patient acceptance of extensive treatment, resulting in increased productivity and completion of cases that would otherwise not be treated.
