Spot on. No wonder celtic nations want a separate path. The UK really has lost the plot lately.

ON 6th ANNIVERSARY OF NATIONAL MINORITY STATUS, COUNCILLORS DEMAND CORNISH TICK-BOX ON 2021 CENSUS

At this time of global emergency, it is essential that the unrelenting priority for government and public services must be to combat coronavirus and to do everything possible to save lives and safeguard our local communities.

But there also appears to be a willingness from parliamentarians for the House of Commons to operate as a hybrid (part virtual) parliament in the short-term.

In relation to this, we have been made aware that the proposed details for the 2021 census will be considered by MPs within the next few weeks.

Today marks the sixth anniversary of the recognition of the Cornish as a national minority through the Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities, when the UK Government pledged that the Cornish would be afforded “the same status … as the UK’s other Celtic people, the Scots, the Welsh and the Irish.”

It therefore remains deeply disappointing that the present draft of the 2021 (England and Wales) census only includes national identity tick-boxes for English, Northern Irish, Scottish and Welsh.

Mebyon Kernow is pleased that the leader of Cornwall Council, Julian German, and the leaders of the five groups on the unitary authority have today collectively sent a letter to the Minister Chloe Smith requesting a Cornish tick-box on the 2021.

The group leaders are Linda Taylor (Conservative), Malcolm Brown (Liberal Democrat), Carolyn Rule (Independent), Stephen Barnes (Labour) and Dick Cole (Mebyon Kernow).

Cllr Dick Cole has sent a separate letter in his position as the Chairman of Cornwall Council’s working group on national minority status, which also includes representatives of all political groups on the authority.

Once again, west Wales and Cornwall come top of the league for poverty in Northern Europe.

The late and much missed David Penhaligon MP knew a thing or two about Cornwall and our economy when he famously said, "You need more in an economy than just tourism, ice cream and deckchairs."

And so we do for despite years of promises, tourism has brought us very little. It is an extractive economic activity with much of the money raised at Cornish expense leaving us for wealthier parts. Tourism is only a part of Cornwall's income and is not the 'goose which lays the golden egg'.

Other parts of Britain recognise this fact and particularly in Scotland, the true burdens and costs of tourism and over dependency on it are being addressed in Edinburgh and The Highlands. We again call for a Cornwall tourism tax, proper taxes on second homes and for the retention of VAT raised in Cornwall to stay in Cornwall.

We also call for return of a greater percentage of funds raised in Cornwall and taxes paid by the residents of Cornwall to be returned by the distant and uncaring Westminster Government whose true interests lay in the wealthy South East of England and the M25 belt..

Cornwall needs more control over its governance and although the devolution of substantial power from Westminster to Cornwall has achieved a little, more power is needed to include greater control over revenue.

Mebyon Kernow would like to wish our Honorary President, Ann Trevenen Jenkin, all the very best on her 90th birthday today.

A wonderful person, she is a stalwart of the Cornish movement and the last surviving founder member of MK from way back in 1951. Active in a vast array of Cornish organisations, she also served as the first female Grand Bard of the Cornish.

We all hope you have a truly marvellous day and that Morwenna, Loveday, Gawen & Conan, as well as the wider family, are able to find ways to make it special for you.

There were no local elections in Cornwall yesterday, when the two largest establishment parties suffered significant electoral setbacks across England as electors looked elsewhere to cast their votes.

Ten years on from the imposition of the unitary authority, we can only speculate on how well MK would have done this week if Cornwall’s six district councils (with a total of 249 elected members) had not been abolished.
