Bandhej is probably the oldest known technique of tie & die which was discovered some 5000 years ago. In India, Bandhani work was started by the Khatri community of Gujarat. Towns in Rajasthan like Jaipur, Sikar, Bhilwara, Udaipur, Bikaner, Ajmer, and Jamnagar in Gujarat are the well-known centers that produce world-class Bandhej odhnis, sarees, and turbans.
The term bandhani is derived from the Sanskrit verbal root bandh (โ€œto bind, to tieโ€). The art of Bandhana is a highly skilled process.
The technique involves dyeing a fabric which is tied tightly with a thread at several points, thus producing a variety of patterns like Chandrakala, Bavan Baug, Shikari etcetera; depending on the manner in which the cloth is tied. The main colour used in Bandhana are yellow, red, blue, green and black.

Famous for its illustrative themes exhibiting traditions and social life, baluchari is a saree made in Murshidabad, a historical city in West Bengal. Handwoven with rich silk, baluchari encompasses intricate artwork that strongly represents Indian mythology and folktales.

After the Ganga river flooded, the village of Baluchar submerged, and the artisans consequently moved to Bishnupur, a village in the Bankura district. They developed their unique style, setting a statement in the saree industry during the Malla era.

Types of Baluchari

While there isnโ€™t a lot of variation in the type of silk or method of weaving used today, balucharis can be broadly categorized based on the threads used in weaving the patterns:

Baluchari (resham): the simplest balucharis have resham threads in a single colour to weave the entire pattern

Baluchari (meenakari): these balucharis have threads in 2 or more colours with attractive meenakari work that further brightens the patterns

Swarnachari (baluchari in gold): They are the most gorgeous balucharis, woven with gold or silver coloured threads (often with meenakari work in another colour) that illuminate the patterns to a much larger extent.

The cost of these threads and the intricacies in the patterns determine the resulting price of a baluchari saree.

In the present era of contemporary global fashion, baluchari sarees are often donned as a status symbol and, more than that, a sign of aristocracy, good style, and appreciation for their importance in history. You can be sure that with every baluchari saree you add to your wardrobe, you are in fact bringing home and eventually draping around yourself seven yards of Indiaโ€™s complex and rich history.

Indian culture and art has always caught my attention since childhood. Collecting artefacts, creating something with fusion of art forms has been my favourite. During my recent visit to Kochi, the autorickshaw guy whom I hired to show me around Kochi too me too a government certified handloom store. He would get coupons if he brought tourist there. On collecting 3 coupons he gets 1 litre petrol or 1kg rice freeโ€ฆ

I was a little reluctant to go the store knowing my shopping spreeโ€ฆbut I chose to go for him.

Kerala set sarees in handloom have been part of my life seeing grandmothers, maa, aunt wearing them.

This saree caught my attention since it is a beautiful combination of two art forms, that too from north and south. Itโ€™s a fully handloom woven pure cotton saree with block print motives. The border weaved with silver thread which usually is gold.

Light weight, soft, good length, great for office wear best of all loved by meโ€ฆ

Banarasi sarees have been a traditional attire in India for centuries, and they have always been known for their intricate designs and cultural heritage. Banarasi silk was introduced to India by the Mughal Empire with its intricate weaving and designing craftsmanship. The Banarasi silk today has a mixture of two different cultures, the Mughals and Indian. In the olden days, silk for this saree was imported from China; nowadays the silk is sourced from the Southern parts of India.
The Banarasi sarees are made in Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh. The Banarasi sarees were originally embellished with threads made from real gold and silver for the royal family. For them to be affordable nowadays for everyone, the threads have been replaced with coloured gold and silver threads. It usually takes around 15 to 30 days to complete weaving a Banarasi saree. However, it depends on the complexity of the design and patterns. Normally 3 weavers are required in the creation of this saree. One weaves the saree, the second one handles the revolving ring in making bundles, and the third one assists in border designing. Making the Banarasi saree requires teamwork. Ideally, a Banarasi saree has around 5600 thread wires and all are 45 inches wide. The craftsmen make a base of 24-26 inches long. Designing the motifs begins at the bundling stage.
An artist created design boards by sketching the designs on a graph paper along with colour concepts. Punch cards are then created before selecting the final design then hundreds of perforated cards are created to accommodate a single design for a saree. To knit the perforated cards on the loom, different colours and threads are used. The perforated cards are then paddled in a systematic manner to ensure the main weave picks up the right colours and patterns.
The Banarasi saree is divided into categories like Tissue, Butidar, Cutwork, Tanchoi, and Jangal. Tissue sarees are woven with golden Zari Brocade to add sheen to the saree. Butidar sarees are woven with brocade threads silver, silk, and gold. Cutwork sarees are the less expensive version of Jamdani sarees. They are products of the cutwork technique on plain texture. Leaves, jasmine, creepers, and marigold flowers are popular motifs featured on Cutwork sarees. Tanchoi sarees patterns are woven with colourful weft silk yarns. The decorations on this saree are large motifs of paisleys and the border has criss-cross patterns.
Jangal sarees are woven with colourful silk threads itโ€™s decorated with intricate patterns of Jangala motifs and vegetation that fall along the saree.
These traditional and stunning Banarasi silk sarees are recognized globally due to the unique patterns and intricate designs made on the sarees. The Banarasi saree is a must-have in the wardrobe.

Vishu is one of the most important festivals in Kerala, and Malayalis all over the world

Observed on the first day of the Malayalam month of Medam, the harvest festival heralds the beginning of the spring season and the astrological New Year for Malayalis.

The first thing people are supposed to see on the day is a ritual arrangement that the woman of the house, usually, makes in the puja room. โ€˜Kaniโ€™ means "that which is seen first". A typical Vishu Kani (that which is seen first on Vishu) consists of auspicious items such as rice, a photo/idol of Lord Vishnu, flowers, fruits and vegetables, betel leaves, clothes, money and gold/silver coins, a mirror, holy scriptures, a lamp, and yellow flowers called Kanikkonna.

Oxidised jewellery in earlier days were worn by not so well off people (that was the thought then). Gone are the days when people wore the real stuff for occasions to feel accepted.
Oxidised jewellery is in vogue again as a classy option with all its charm and fine craftsmanship. it is inexpensive if you compare it with any other type of jewellery
India has been endowed with a rich tribal culture, which despite modernisation has kept its unique traditions and values intact. Tribal Jewelry still bears a definite earthy charm.
The Process :
Oxidation in silver or sterling silver occurs due to exposure to oxygen over a period of time in a pressurized atmosphere. The blackish finish is given to silver jewellery by purposely exposing it to air that contains sulphur or immersing it in potassium sulphide. The jewellery made through this technique stands out and can be made with ethnic, traditional or geometric designs
Maintenance :
Keep your costume jewellery in a closed cardboard box, covering it up with cotton. The ideal place to store them is cool and away from sunlight. Even indoor light source like florescent lights or light bulbs turn the color of oxidised jewelry over time. If you expect not to wear a certain piece for a long time, put it in an air-tight bag and store it in a drawer.
Style it Up :
Oxidised jewellery is a big hit with fashionistas is, it can be found in a variety of designs and colors with mix-n-match of different material like wood, beads, ivory, shells, jute, terracotta and different types of metals.
Oxidised jewellery go well with Khadi, Linen & Cotton materials. Choose your jewellery style as per the occasion. Being different is the new normal, so do try anything and everything to be a trend setter ๐Ÿ˜Š

Donโ€™t we all love wearing a Saree? This wonderful piece of cloth adds elegance to our look. Undoubtedly, saree is the attire, which is appreciated by men too. Therefore, if you want to gain somebodyโ€™s attention or just be a diva, Saree is your thing.
5 Important Tips to Look Elegant in Saree
1. Right Fabric to elevate your appearance
Sarees come in different fabrics & colors. The look of your saree depends on the kind of event you want to attend & the choice of fabric.
While cotton looks neat & crisp it creases fast and needs to be smooth-ironed after every wash.
If you prefer regular wear, you can choose Chiffon, Rayon, Georgette & other fabrics since they are easy to manage. Getting the fabric right can help you carry your saree with grace.
2. Choose the right color that makes you look amazing
Bright colors add volume to a person's look & that is why such sarees are donned in weddings or social gatherings. Subtle or mellow colors depict the attitude of focus while maintaining a trendy look.
3. Right Blouse matters
Choosing a blouse that complements your saree can easily be regarded as one of the best tips to accentuate your look. You can choose the same color of saree for the blouse or go for soft colors that match with the color of the saree. You can go for pattern-based blouses to bring a wonderful effect to the overall look of your saree.
4. The Drape can make or break your look
Wondering how to style saree? Drape it properly to be a showstopper! Draping is an integral part of wearing a saree. There are plenty of draping styles that can seamlessly enhance your appearance.
Emphasize on pleating the saree neatly & pinning it
5. Complement with Beautiful Accessories
Accessories complete your look. However, accessorizing depends on the type of saree you are wearing. If you are wearing a heavy saree for weddings or social gatherings, then you can easily use heavy accessories. But, if you are opting for daily wear sarees, then you need to choose light accessories to balance your look.
Thus, these are a few helpful tips on how to dress up in a saree & look exquisite. You can also buy saree offline and online from The Indian Divaa. Contact us for a personal screeni

Paithani saris: Everything you need to about this Maharashtrian heirloom
Paithani gets its name from the place to which this craft belongs- 'Paithan'. Paithan is a town in Maharashtra, located in Aurangabad district. Major contributors in history for Paithani to have flourished are the Peshwas, the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb, and the Nizams.

A major turn in the history of Paithani is the shift in its manufacturing centre from Paithan to Yeola during the Peshwa period. Like other Indian textiles Paithani had a setback with the advent of the industrial revolution and the British rule in India. In late 19th century, a Sardar from Yeola, Raghuji Naik along with a trader Shyamji Walji brought a few weavers from Paithan to Yeola. Since 1980 Paithani weaving took a rebirth in town of Yeola. Before this Yeola Shalu was majorly manufactured in Yeola.

The paithani saree is a symbol of intellectually refined artwork.

Since it is considered no less than an ornamental treasure, so even mothers pass this heirloom to their daughters during their marriage or any special occasion.

Till date, there are paithani sarees available, which are hand woven with real silver or gold and pure silk for the elites.\
Paithani Sarees Types

Once there were times when paithani saree was made in cotton. But nowadays you will find it made in pure silk only. If you go for handloom paithani sarees then you will have two varieties โ€“ Brocade Paithani and Pure Silk Paithani Saree.

The Brocade paithani saree have an intricate pallu design of around 40 inches and hence can be woven by a skilled weaver.

The pure silk paithani saree is the traditional variety having a pallu of 28 inches. It comes in lesser intricate design and requires lesser time to weave.

Besides these main types there are also many types of paithani sarees available in the market such as semi paithani saree, zardozi paithani, muniya paithani etc.

Also there are some paithani sarees known by their designs like dancing peacock paithani, chitra, lotus and many more

Types of Motifs on the Paithani Saree?
Generally, paithani saree feature butis on the body and the interesting part is its pallu and border.

The sungudi saree is a six-yard wonder that mothers and grandmothers wore. But not any more! Now this saree, which is native to Madurai, gets a makeover, so that it's attractive to young women as well.

The Process of the sungudi saree is an art work which needs patience with calculations and pattern knowledge , in earlier days there are masters in making sungudi sarees.

The reason why the Sungudi can be called an โ€˜eco friendly sareeโ€™ is because the dyes used in colouring the cotton threads are extracted from natural leaves and hence do not cause allergies. History and origin of Sungudi sarees can be traced back to the Sourashtrians (Gujarat) who along with their migration brought this art to Southern India. While the entire ardently spends their days on weaving this beautiful textile, Sungudi sarees are the major source of livelihood for more than 10,000 people in Madurai areas . With its main manufacturing unit and establishment in Madurai, Tamil Nadu. The Sourashtrian community are the masters in this art. The Authenticity of sungudi saree manufacturing using natural dyes belongs to them only.
