Today we pay homage to the Black pioneers who paved the way for us all. Those that fought literally and figuratively, peacefully and by any means necessary; we honor them today and everyday. We also want to take a moment to especially recognize the folks that haven’t made the history books - our great relatives and local pioneers lifting up the Black community in the Greater Hartford area. Please honor them by sharing their stories via comments or messaging us privately!

Happy Black History Month! ❤️

Did you know Black History Month was first proposed by Black educators and the Black United Students at Kent State University in February 1969. The first celebration of Black History Month took place at Kent State one year later, from January 2 to February 28,1970. ✨

The University High School of Science and Engineering Alumni Community is deeply saddened by the loss of our friend, teammate and fellow alum Jaqhawn Walters (C/O 2014). So many of us were touched by his exuberant personality and admired his commitment and loyalty to those near and dear to him. There are not enough words to express just how much he means to us. Our deepest condolences go out to his family and friends; our hearts and prayers are forever with you. We love you JQ, rest in eternal peace and power. ♥️

From: Derron Dunbar (Class of 2014) A good friend to ANYONE and EVERYONE. He wasn’t just my teammate or friend though, he was a good laugh when you needed it the most. Multi talented, college graduate, pro b-ball player.. Just an all around role model for everyone he crossed paths with. Thank you for everything... SIP BRO

From: AJ Cardona (High School Basketball Coach) Jaqhawn Walters was an amazing young man whose smile lit up the room. His sense of humor really allowed us to relax in tense moments. Being a heck of a basketball player was also a part of that confidence he instilled in us. Saddened deeply by his passing.

From: Taylor Payne (Class of 2014)
I can’t pinpoint a favorite memory with Jaqhawn because there are so many. There wasn’t a time he couldn’t put a smile on my face. JQ became a brother to me, no time or distance changed our friendship. I could laugh, cry, and just be myself with him. Thank you for the endless memories from sharing your locker with me to making silly songs about our day in class. You will forever be missed.

Hello everyone!
We are the Alumni Mentorship and Scholarship Program for the University High School of Science and Engineering - an organization that is meant to guide underserved UHS students towards personal development, academic excellence and college readiness!

Our goals involve working hands-on with the students, faculty, and staff to enhance the future bestowed upon our mentees. Not only will we work with the UHS body directly, but we also hope to aid students through our scholarship component for those advancing to a college or university of their choice.

Stay tuned as we introduce the organization’s executive board next week!
