Ditches and arroyos guide water to the Rio Grande and help water the drier parts of our state. But beware—a flash flood can happen in just 10 seconds, with water speeds up to 40 miles per hour. It’s extremely difficult to escape, and drowning is a real risk.

In May, we had such a delightful time giving presentations to so many students at Los Ranchos Elementary School and handing out our goodie bags to them!

As your summer vacation continues, remember that bridges over the ditch can be slippery or possibly unstable. The banks of ditches are very slippery—if someone falls in, they can’t easily get out! Please stay away and out of the ditches so you don't get hurt.

Beware of hidden dangers! Some ditches may look peaceful on the surface, but undercurrents can lurk below, pulling even the strongest swimmers into danger. Stay safe and avoid entering ditches; undercurrents are deceptive, and escaping them is often much harder than you think.
