Today, we conclude our Big Apple-inspired Mondays with Marcus series with a charming design by Heartspun Quilts ~ Pam Buda. What inspired her?
"I adore the Statue of Liberty and was inspired by her crown to create this quilt. There are 7 'spikes' in Lady Liberty's crown commemorating the seven continents and the seven seas.
I chose this hand-pieced quilt pattern because it closely replicated the spikes in her crown. Notice I colored seven of the spikes using Marcus' Aged Muslin in the color of her verdigris green patina. The other spikes of the star block are made from a variety of my prints. I used the Tea Dye color of Aged Muslin for the diamonds that connect the star blocks because it always looks like the fabric is old and shaded over time.
While the quilt is hand-pieced, there are three ways to construct the quilt: make your own template, EPP papers, or use an acrylic windowpane template like I did." Starter kits are available.

Carrie Quinn of Pieceful Gathering Quilt Shop bring us her inspiration as Martha Washington's Star Runner" proejct! As she explains:
"Created for Marcus Fabrics Big Apple Monday -- During our stay in New York, the Marcus folks put us up at the Sohotel, located in "The Bowery" neighborhood. It is the oldest continuously operating hotel in New York City, opening its doors in 1805 and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The hotel was first known as The Westchester and is know as the hotel where General George Washington stayed, as he arrived in New York to watch the final remaining British troops flee back to England in November of 1783 at the end of the Revolutionary War. My little runner uses the traditional Martha Washington Star quilt block which was designed in colonial times to honor the wife of the President."

And be sure to return next week for our final entry! Enjoy...
Today's project comes from Lynn Wilder of Sew'n Wild Oaks... Her "Double Dutch Treat" quilt is inspired by New York's Dutch origins:
"It’s hard to know where to begin to share my trip to NYC to meet the staff at Marcus Fabrics in July. One of my friends suggested I read New York by Edward Rutherfurd….so I did, and I highly recommend it if you are an avid reader like me. I learned that the colony of New Netherland was founded on the southern tip of Manhattan Island and was christened New Amsterdam, the capital of New Netherland in 1624. Brooklyn, Harlem, and Wall Street (Waal Straat) are all names from the colonial Dutch. Wall Street was originally built as a wall to protect New Amsterdam from pirates, and potential dangers to the colony. The Bowery (bouwerij) is also a Dutch word which means farm. The New Netherland colony was founded in a spirit of trade and everyone was welcome.
What do you think of when you think of Dutch, other than wooden shoes, and windmills…..tulips! That is why I designed Double Dutch Treat. The double treat in this project is that you get to see the luscious Lanacot wools blending perfectly with my Heathstone cotton fabric line.
Thank you, Marcus Fabrics, for giving me the opportunity to bring this ‘country girl’ to the Big Apple. Instead of feeling like a fish out of water, I felt so welcomed and treasured the opportunity to experience New York City, meet the Marcus talented staff, and make memories to last me a lifetime."
Lynn explained that the photo including the truck is her husband's favorite ; ) Be sure to catch up with all of our Big Apple Mondays free designer projects over at https://www.marcusfabrics.com/page/522/mondays-with-marcus/
And remember, we have 2 more exciting weeks to go!!
Today, features a "New York Snowman" table runner by Cindy Staub Quilt Doodle Designs! Her inspirations goes back to her childhood visits to New York City:
"It was a thrill to go to New York City and visit my Marcus Fabrics
family. It was exciting to meet with everyone, make some memories, and do some brainstorming for upcoming Quilt Doodle fabric lines and go thru the Marchives and dream of some future quilts. Tracy, Lora Lisa and I enjoyed hanging out together and visiting. It was such a pleasure to talk in person instead of over a zoom call. Since Covid I have missed going to Quilt Market and the opportunity to meet in person with Pati,
Monika and Kristen. I really have missed the collaboration with fellow designers. This trip was wonderful and was uplifting in so many ways. Our Marcus Family were wonderful hosts and it's always a pleasure towork with them! Thank you, Pati, Monika and Kristen! It was awesome to see the behind the scenes at the Marcus office and meet everyone that makes my ideas into beautiful fabric. For me, I've dreamed of returning to NYC for years, I was once a New Yorker, my family moved to Orange County to the town of Warwick. We drove from Houston Texas to Warwick leaving on New Year's Day 1969. We arrived in New York state during a Nor'easter. I had never seen snow before, every time my dad would turn on the windshield wipers my two-year-old sister, Stef would let out a blood curdling scream. It was a long drive... I was seven years old. My parents first stop was to Gimbels department store to buy, boots, coats, mittens, hats, gloves, the whole works! We then settle into a motel in town. It would be our home for three months while our home was being
built. One of my fondest memories is the day my dad and I built a
snowman in the front of the hotel. This is where I get my inspiration
for my project, my first snowman."

Happy Monday, everyone! Today's featured designer is Jeni Gaston, who found New York City inspiration not only in the boats and ships found in the Long Island Sound, but also in the city's ship-like architecture! As she describes it:
"Traveling to NYC is always a fun trip for my husband Glen and me. Our son, Kris, moved to NY about 6 years ago, where his wife is from. They live on City Island, which is in the Long Island Sound. We haven’t done all the tourist things there are to do yet in NYC, but we have visited the 911 memorial and walked around the city, so I’m planning to visit more bucket list items on the next trip. One of the things that really struck me going there in person the first time was all the water and all the boats and ships! Glen and I were both in the USN when we were young, and even though we have seen many ships, Glen was even stationed on a Destroyer, it still makes us happy when we see more! And I really love all the sailboats! So, I decided to make a Sailboat wall-hanging in some patriotic colors. I have just designed my first line of fabric with Marcus, but I don’t have it to work with yet. So, I chose to use a basic called “Dapple Dots” in beige for my backgrounds, and then I was given some pretty fabrics when I visited the Marcus Fabrics offices this past spring! It’s a mix of Pam Buda’s Fabric “Redwood Cupboard” and Paula Barnes fabric “Companions.” You can easily make this project with any of their newer lines, or of course when my fabric “Scrap Happy” becomes available! Have you gotten to visit “The Big Apple?”
Check out out Mondays with Marcus page for a link to Jeni's free project and those of our other talented designers! And stay tuned in through October 30 for more ; )

For today's project, Dawn Heese of Linen Closet Designs shares her personal inspiration for her charming table topper, "The Naturalist". In her words:
I travel all over for fun and with my quilting but had never been to New York City, so I was very excited to visit and had a list of must-see places. As one of the newest Marcus designers, this would be my first time meeting all the members of the Marcus team in person. We had previously only met via zoom. It was wonderful to be able to sit together and brainstorm in person! That's when I was told to look around NYC for inspiration to create a project for Big Apple Mondays. If you are not familiar with my work, I do a lot of applique and am greatly influenced by antique quilts, particularly the red and green quilts from the early 1800s. I knew that I would find plenty of inspiration in places like Central Park but did not expect that my final design would come from such an unusual place.
The Museum of Natural History was at the top of my list to visit. The museum has so much to offer, from the grand lobby with its dinosaur skeletons to the displays of indigenous people, there is something for everyone to enjoy and learn from. The museum has a Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Hall that is a permanent exhibit to honor the former NY governor and US President. Teddy's buckskin jacket is one the pieces that are on exhibit. Imagine my surprise to see that the pockets were adorned with folksy, floral applique. Folksy tulips are on the lower pocket and the upper pocket has a posy made of clover shaped petals. The photos of the applique aren't great because the jacket is behind glass, but this would be the beginning of my project. I drew up an applique design that incorporated those motifs and used fabric from my Neighborhood Florist line that is in stores now. I chose to add a sawtooth border to represent the spikes on Lady Liberty's crown to frame the applique. Since my design came from Teddy's jacket, my little quilt is called The Naturalist. At 19" square it's a great size to hang on a stand or drape from a basket. A limited number of kits is available for purchase.
Fun fact- Dawn shares the same birthday with Teddy Roosevelt ; ).

Tracy Souza of Plumcute Designs is today's featured designer for Mondays! You'll love her adorable pinkeep project, and her inspiration:
"Wandering the streets of Manhattan is a visual delight full of buildings with patina, chipped paint, and interesting architectural elements. My designer heart loved every minute spent walking and so I created this sweet little pinkeep with soft colors that reminded me of the patina and chipped paint and its mini pom pom trim as a nod to interesting architecture. Hopefully you enjoy stitching it as much as I did designing it and in a small way it's like you were in NY with me!"

While we, as a nation, remember today as the 22nd anniversary of the 9/11 attacks in New York City, we present today's design from Red Crinoline Quilts...
In their words,
"September 11,2001 is a day no man, woman or child in the United States can ever forget. The inspiring stories from those who chose to respond, however they could, to the devastation in New York will always remind our country of the inherent strength within all of us. While in New York recently, we visited the 9-11 Memorial to join others in solemn remembrance. In the quiet gardens we saw the Survivor Tree, a Calgary Pear Tree that barely survived that deadly day. The tree was gentle carried to New Jersey in the days following the towers" fall, nursed back to health, and replanted on site at the Memorial in 2010.It was a bright and beautiful blue-sky day when we visited the 9-11 Memorial, just as it was in 2001 when the World Trade Center was attacked. "The Survivor Tree" design now stands as a living reminder of our country's remarkable patriotic spirit, and the lost loved ones who will always remain alive in our hearts."

This week we feature Katie Solberg of Pieceful Gathering Quilt Shop!! Her mini table topper fits the theme of Labor Day, or any national celebration. As she describes it: "When Marcus Fabrics invited me to come to New York City, I was so excited! A chance to see what goes on behind the scenes in the design studios of Marcus Fabrics sounded incredible. I had never been to NYC and it was definitely on my “bucket list” of places to visit. Our time in the offices was very cool. It was so much fun getting to know some of the other Marcus designers and seeing how all the different parts of the design team work together. I also really enjoyed seeing the city itself and doing a few of the NYC touristy things like visiting the American Folk Art Museum, eating at Katz’s Deli and walking through Time Square. The most memorable part of the trip for me though, was our visit to the 9/11 Memorial. This is a place that every American should visit. I left the museum, and the city in general, with an overwhelming feeling of patriotism. The way that New Yorkers, and all Americans, banded together at that time made me feel very proud to be an American. So, my design, a wool mat I’m calling “Hip Hip Hooray!” is a celebration of our amazing country and the incredible people that live here. This little mat is quick to stitch up and fun to display all summer long. It looks great on a side table with a candle or candy dish in the center. Kits are also available!"

continues this week with an interesting take on the theme from Sheryl Johnson. As she explains it: "The designers at Marcus Fabrics were invited to visit New York this
summer. Sounds like fun right? Well for this homebody it sounded
like anything but fun and for several reasons I decided not to attend. When we were asked to create a project inspired by our trip I wasat a loss until I saw the vintage quilt that inspired Homebody House"
Sheryl's design lets you customize the place that makes you feel at "Home", whether it's NYC, Temecula, CA, or any point in between!

New Marcus BOM alert!!!
"MoonRising" is Krisanne Watkins' colorful mix of celestially-inspired blocks, created with DAPPLE DOTS and AGED MUSLIN, two popular Marcus basics. It features 13 four-pointed stars, interspersed with sampler style blocks that show off the colors of the fabrics.
In describing the inspiration for her BOM quilt, Krisanne explains:
"My idea for the MoonRising quilt design started with the purchase of the Farmer's Almanac for my grandson, Coen. Rapidly approaching his teenage years, he has been very interested in our backyard garden his whole life.
This purchase brought back memories of my gardening mentor, my grandfather, Clark Stevens Wood. Each year, he asked my family for a new copy of the Farmer's Almanac. In its pages, I learned about full moons, Supermoons, and how the lunisolar calendar affects the seasons and gardening. Many cultures and peoples around the world have recognized the 13 full moons by naming them MoonRising is my nod to this tradition."
The ultimate test for true Judie superfans! By correctly identifying 6 of her collections, you'll be entered jnto a drawing for a fun prize pack! Who's up for the challenge?
