I would like to help create the society where we are building the careers we really want to be in. Where work is meaningful and helpful instead of something you dread. Where all of our talents are utilized to sustain us.
🍎📚📚
Has that ever been possible before? It just seems so reachable and navigable now. I’ve never had a dream job. I’ve always just wanted to run writing workshops, come out every now and then to spit a little poetry, travel, and write books. 92% of my life I want to spend on publishing, writing… and being left alone😂
( like Agatha Christie on Hey Arnold )
😅😅
I’m just now finding a path to do some version of that. I want that for us as a generation. millennials are the most overeducated group of people. We ought to be able to figure it out.

I'll make more content on this topic on my YouTube Channel

Putting Meaning Ahead of Money is the Secret to Wealth: Here’s Why. 09/02/2021

In my work consulting with small business visionaries on growing the confidence to create their own dream career, we often talk about the importance of making both a difference and a dollar. It's no secret that we spend most of our lives chasing money in one form or another. The very nature of that "paper chase" and "securing the bag" can have unhealthy effects on the way we look at wealth as a whole....

It’s hard to know what problem you solve and what value you bring in business when you are starting from scratch. I didn’t have an invention, product, or obvious expertise. I have an English degree and a self-published poetry book. I saw the dire need for women to take control of their own self esteem so that it never depends on another person, a job, or how life is going at the time. Now I help women learn to radiate confidence from the inside out by mastering a few key areas of their lives. What is your area of expertise?

I was at Marshalls looking at the “candy-store” of affordable beauty products ready to splurge! Spa day doesn’t have to be expensive or take place in an actual spa. 59% of women go to spas for the rest and relaxation/pampering over trying to “look” better. Spa activities make us feel good, and why not establish a ritual while you have the time! What are your spa day essentials?

It is time for you to build and earn what you are worth instead of settling for the wages from the work you are told to do. There’s more to being a poet than performing and writing. I went from poet to professional speaker because that’s where my calling led me. As a small business owner who has been an artist, teacher, 9-5 worker, and student I can tell you I know what it’s like to want to take whatever it is that you do to the NEXT LEVEL. I work with those who have a mindset for MOMENTUM. If you are a writer/artist, you can use that to sustain yourself financially as much as it fulfills you personally.

This woman is the reason I started performing my poetry. Alysia Harris of Brave New Voice 2008. Of The Strivers Row. Author of the book “How much we Must Have Looked like Stars to Stars.” She looks at life through a lens of delicate observation and she is such a careful writer and powerful spoken word poet. I finally met her at a show and she noticed me in the audience mouthing the words to all of her poems with her! Who are your heroes?

07/01/2021

I failed so many times trying to write my first book.
I had a writing degree and still I struggled to push the language out and arrange it into something comprehensible. I was beginning to think it wasn’t meant for me. The act of finishing the manuscript unedited, ugly, under developed gave me the extra push to finish the entire process. Taking one step let’s you know that you can take two then three and before you know it you will be sprinting. What does your next step look like?

J. Swift

I am a performance poet expanding my creative practice into the business space. I am already in sales. So often I have to sell myself efficiently enough to convince an audience of strangers to want to listen to me for ten minutes to an hour. I have to sell myself to classrooms of middle-schoolers and inspire them enough to participate in an hour of creative writing. I knew that if I could do those things, I shouldn’t be afraid to maximize on my ideas of what my ideal creative career looked like in my dreams. Entrepreneurship has always been a scary thought to me because I was never formally trained in business and didn’t see myself as a salesperson, but I have been doing it all along. My first big step into business expansion was writing my book, “Monsters: Poetry on How to Bite Back.” I studied the model of keynote speakers who were not writers but used their books like business cards to boost credibility, gain clients, and boost memorability from stage. As a performer I have the same opportunity to have my book be a highlighter to my spoken word. After publishing it, I began teaching with the Nashville Youth Speaks organization called Southern Word. At that point, not only did my spoken word have a place in poetry shows, but it was something I could get up and go to work to every morning.

Speaking every day and running writing workshops inspired me to create my own personal growth workshops for an audience I resonated with which was millennial women. This made me officially consider myself a public speaker. I felt like someone capable of a breakout session at a conference or a keynote to wrap up an event. I began getting questions from people who came to my workshops about how to write a book, how to write poetry, and how to speak on stage. I was graduating from Sewanee University with an MFA in creative writing and those kinds of questions made my heart expand with the feeling of having purpose. I decided to take on two per a month to coach in these areas (free of charge because I didn’t know what I was doing just yet and I was nervous). Two of the first four people I took on published their books in the summer of 2019. My body of work came from weaving my interests and professional values together
