EXODUS 4
SERVING GOD EFFECTIVELY

Scripture reading: Exodus 4:1-31

Observation:
Moses had to flee for his life to the remote desert of Midian, where he settled down for forty years tending sheep, getting married, and fathering two sons. But then God appeared to him at the burning bush and called him to return to Egypt to deliver God’s people from their slavery. It was an overwhelming task for this eighty-year-old shepherd, who had lived in obscurity for the past forty years. He would have to confront the most powerful monarch in the world and demand that he releases about two million slaves, whose cheap labor was essential to the Egyptian economy.

Application:
The question is how Moses responds and serves God? How to serve God effectively?
1. To serve God effectively, depend on His presence and strength, not on your abilities (Exod. 4:1-17). God often calls you to do that which is beyond your abilities and resources. The Lord often has to teach us that if we don’t rely on His presence and His strength, we can’t do anything. Either He calls us to do something that is far beyond our natural abilities or, like Moses, He shows us our inadequacy so that we must rely on His presence and strength.
2. To serve God effectively, be ready for the difficulties of the mission (Exod. 4:18-23). Serving the Lord puts you into battle with the enemy and battles are difficult and often result in casualties. As Moses will discover after Israel leaves Egypt, the difficulties come from within the camp, too. You’ll catch more criticism and opposition from those in the church than from that outside. Be prepared!
3. To serve God effectively, be obedient to His commandments (Exod. 4:24-26). God was teaching Moses that if he was going to serve the Lord, he had to obey His commandments, even over the objections of those closest to him.
4. To serve God effectively, work with people who are willing to follow God’s ways (Exod. 4:27-31). You cannot serve God effectively by yourself. The Lord wants to build His church, which means working with others. But more often, God graciously gives you some faithful people to work with. Work with them to help build the Lord’s church.

So many times we say that we can't serve God because we aren't whatever is needed. We're not talented enough or smart enough or whatever. But if you are in covenant with Jesus Christ, He is responsible for covering your weaknesses, for being your strength. He will give you His abilities for your disabilities! (Kay Arthur)

Prayer:
Oh Lord, we praise You for all the mighty things that You have done in our lives. We pray that You will increase our ability and potential so that we can serve you effectively and productively, use our lives Oh Lord in any way that pleases You. In Jesus' name, AMEN.

EXODUS 3
GOD’S PLAN TO MOSES AND MOSES’ PLACE IN THE PLAN

Scripture: Exodus 3:1-22
“So now, go. I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people the Israelites out of Egypt.”
‭‭Exodus‬ ‭3:10‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Observation:
The Lord called Moses to lead Israel out of Egypt. Moses expressed concern about his inadequacies and his ability to deliver Israel. But the Lord reassured Moses that He would be with him and give him the power to deliver Israel. Aaron was called to be a spokesman for Moses. Aaron and Moses traveled to Egypt and spoke to the elders of Israel.

Application:
The Plan of God to Moses and Israel.
1. GOD CALLS THE ATTENTION OF MOSES (1-6) God did not speak to Moses until He had Moses’ attention. The burning bush was a spectacular phenomenon that captured Moses’ attention, but it changed nothing until Moses received the Word of God that came to him there. Often God’s Word does not touch our heart the way that it might because we do not give it our attention.
2. GOD HEARD THE CRY OF THE ISRAELITES. (7-9) God notices the afflictions of Israel. The sorrows of God’s people are known to him. T
God hears the cries of his afflicted people. The oppression they endured; the highest and greatest of their oppressors are not above him. God promises speedy deliverance by methods out of the common ways of providence. Those whom God, by his grace, delivers out of a spiritual Egypt, he will bring to a heavenly Canaan.
3. GOD SEND MOSES TO BRING OUT THE ISRAELITES FROM EGYPT. (10-11) God could do it all by Himself, but it is most often that God plans to work with and through people, as we are workers together with Him. Who am I: This was not the right question; “Who is God?” was the proper question. God’s identity was more important than who Moses was. When we know the God who is with us, we can step forth confidently to do His will.
4. GOD ASSURES MOSES THAT HE WILL BE WITH HIM. (12-13) I will certainly be with you: After this, Moses had no right to protest further. From here his objections move from a godly lack of self-reliance to an ungodly lack of faith. We all feel insecure at times. But we do not have to depend on our strength. God has promised to be with us, just as he was with Moses. When God asks us to do something, he will give us the ability and the resources to do it.
5. GOD INTRODUCES HIMSELF TO MOSES. (14) The name I AM has within it the idea that God is completely independent; that He relies on nothing for life or existence. God becomes whatever is lacking in our time of need.
6. GOD WILL PERFORM WONDERS AMONG THEM (19-20) God knew this from the beginning. He knew what it would take to move the heart of Pharaoh, and the plagues and calamities to come were engineered for a specific purpose and they were not haphazardly planned. Pharaoh would not let go of them easily, so God would bring great judgment against Egypt to persuade him.
7.GOD WILL BLESS ISRAEL. (V.22) God promised to arrange things not only to move Pharaoh’s heart but also to move the heart of the Egyptian people so that when Israel did depart, they would be showered with silver and gold and clothing. This was not stealing or extortion, it was the appropriate wages for the years of forced labor.
Conclusion: The Lord God, in keeping His covenant, will not only deliver them from the evil of Egypt but will give them blessings of a promised land. God’s blessings of redemption are filled with the fruitfulness of abundant life. Our Lord has prepared a place for us, by way of the cross of Calvary, i.e., that where He is there, we will be also. We must remember that we live by the gracious provisions of God.

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for calling and choosing us to advance Your Kingdom on earth. We pray that may You give us heavenly wisdom and grace so we can carry out every task that You have mandated us to do. We also implore for Your presence to always go before us. In Jesus' name, AMEN.

EXODUS
I DREW HIM OUT OF THE WATER

Scripture: Exodus 2:1-10

Observation:
Exodus 2:1-10 describes the birth and early life of Moses. His mother defies the order to kill Hebrew boys and hides her son. Once he becomes too old to conceal, she places him in a basket on the Nile. This was a deliberate attempt to have Moses adopted, as Moses’ older sister is stationed nearby, watching. Pharaoh’s daughter finds the baby and winds up hiring Moses’ mother to be his wet nurse. Once weaned, Moses is sent back to the Egyptian princess, gaining the benefits of a royal education and upbringing.

Application:
The escape of Moses from Pharaoh’s cruelty teaches three things:
I. GOD'S OVER-RULING PROVIDENCE turned the cruel king's edict to the advantage of the child whom he designed for great things. Had it not been for the edict, Moses would never have been exposed, and Pharaoh's daughter would probably never have seen him.
II. GOD'S BLESSING ON A MOTHER'S FAITHFUL LOVE AND CARE. Jochebed's utmost hope had probably been to save her child's life. God's blessing brought it to pass that she not only obtained that result but procured him the highest social rank and the best possible cultivation of all his powers, whether of mind or body. Mothers should lay this lesson to heart, and whatever danger threatens their children, hope for the best, plan for the best and work for the best.
III. NATURAL VIRTUE ACCEPTABLE IN GOD'S SIGHT. His profession will not save him; but his love of goodness, his efforts to do what is right, his earnest cleaving to the truth, the right, and virtue, will be accepted, through the merits of Christ, and counted to him for righteousness. A man may be very far gone from his original perfectness, but he was made in God's image, he has an instinctive sense of right and wrong. Pharaoh cruelly seeks Israel's destruction, but his daughter charitably compassionates a Hebrew child, and not only so, but, beyond her intention, preserves Israel's deliverer.

Prayer:
Oh Lord, as we acknowledge that we are people of great destiny, we implore You to remove and dismantle every scheme of the enemy in our lives. Always deliver us from evil thing/s and people. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Exodus 1:9-11
THE TEST OF TOUGH TIMES

Scripture: Exodus 1:9-11
"And he said unto his people, Behold, the people of the children of Israel are more and mightier than we 10 Come on, let us deal wisely with them; lest they multiply, and it come to pass, that, when there falleth out any war, they join also unto our enemies and fight against us, and so get them up out of the land.
11 Therefore they did set over them taskmasters to afflict them with their burdens. And they built for Pharaoh treasure cities, Pithom and Raamses."

Observation:
The title "Exodus" comes from a Greek word meaning "going out," and this book tells how the Lord set his people Israel free from slavery and brought them out of Egypt.

The Israelites population was increasing so rapidly, the new king of Egypt feared that they might take over his government. The king made God’s people slaves to keep them under his control. This not only reduced the threat of war but also gave the king a huge pool of workers.

The slaves used mud and straw to make bricks, which were used for the king’s many building projects. Most of the slaves were mistreated by their cruel bosses. Although the Israelites were discouraged, they continued to multiply and become stronger.

Application:
The book of Exodus teaches that the Lord is the one true God and the ruler of all creation. And when the Lord decides to do something, no one can stop him.

We may not be slaves today, but we also face hard times and cruel treatment. When we experience such times, we often feel defeated. Tough times, though, can make us stronger if we learn to put our trust in God. Making it through tough times equips us with qualities that will help us overcome future difficulties.

Prayer:
Oh Lord, we praise You for setting us free from captivity, for redeeming us, and giving us the chance to enjoy liberty and freedom. God, we pray, that You may use our lives through our God-given ability and God-given potential to serve you passionately and wholeheartedly. In Jesus' name, AMEN.

GENESIS 50
Joseph Reassures His Brothers

Scripture: Genesis 50: 19-21
19 But Joseph said to them, “Don’t be afraid. Am I in the place of God? 20 You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives. 21 So then, don’t be afraid. I will provide for you and your children.” And he reassured them and spoke kindly to them.

Observation:
It was probably jealousy that caused Joseph’s brothers to treat him so cruelly, throwing him into a deep pit and finally selling him into slavery, causing his father such deep pain. But God in His wisdom turned a most shocking crime into the most beautiful story, ending in a glorious finale. God in His foreknowledge knew all that was to take place in the life of Joseph, long before he was born – and God prepared the way for the cruel, bullying behavior of his eleven brothers to be transformed into a precious picture, of God’s protection and loving-care for His people.

When at last Joseph revealed that he had been made the governor of all Egypt and was able to protect his entire tribe for the period of the more terrible famine, that was to destroy the world for seven years – Joseph was to comfort His brothers: “You intended to harm me, but God intended it all for good. He brought me to this position so that I could save the lives of many people”(v.20).

Application:
Can we relate to Joseph's life’s journey? It was quite difficult to be in His shoes but indeed God planned it perfectly. Struggles and trials are part of God’s perfect plan for you and me. It is His way of molding and preparing us to be worthy of His blessings. Indeed, it is not easy to face life’s struggles and trials all alone but the Lord sees what we have gone through right now, all we need to do is to endure the pain, the difficulties, the sorrows for it all ends in His due time assuring us that we are not alone in these battles. Always bear in mind that God can turn a bad situation into a better one. Have faith in your heart that a brighter future awaits those who persevere in life as we all keep pressing toward the goal of our service in the Lord’s ministry.

Prayer:
Lord, You are awesome. Nothing can be hidden from You. You know the battles we face right now and we are so grateful because you have assured us that the struggles we face are part of Your preparation for a better future. May we learn what You have taught us through these experiences and we continuously humbling ourselves before You and let Thy will be done…in Jesus’ name. Amen.

GENESIS 49
THE DEATH OF JACOB

Scripture: Genesis 49: 28-33
28 All these are the twelve tribes of Israel, and this is what their father said to them when he blessed them, giving each the blessing appropriate to him. 29 Then he gave them these instructions: “I am about to be gathered to my people. Bury me with my fathers in the cave in the field of Ephron the Hittite, 30 the cave in the field of Machpelah, near Mamre in Canaan, which Abraham bought along with the field as a burial place from Ephron the Hittite. 31 There Abraham and his wife Sarah were buried, there Isaac and his wife Rebekah were buried, and there I buried Leah. 32 The field and the cave in it were bought from the Hittites.” 33 When Jacob had finished giving instructions to his sons, he drew his feet up into the bed, breathed his last, and was gathered to his people.

Observation:
Jacob blessed everyone according to the blessings God in after-times intended to bestow upon them. He spoke about his burial-place, from a principle of faith in the promise of God, that Canaan should be the inheritance of his seed in due time. When he had finished both his blessing and charge and his testimony, he addressed himself to his dying work. He gathered up his feet into the bed, not only as one patiently submitting to the stroke but as one cheerfully composing himself to rest. He freely gave up his spirit into the hand of God, the Father. Death will gather God's people to their believing loved ones together. Under the care of the Great Shepherd, no one shall lack nothing for body or soul. We shall remain unmoved until our work is finished; then, breathing out our souls into His hands for whose salvation we have waited. We shall depart in peace, and leave a blessing for our children after us.

Application:
A life consumed for God’s glory is a life well spent. All efforts, time, and all resources used up for God’s ministry will never be wasted. It will always be pleasing to God and will leave a legacy that would impact the family and future generations. Our labor for the Lord will never be in vain. Let us keep going in service for the greater glory of the Lord despite the challenges of our times.

Prayer:
Lord, we thank you so much for this wonderful opportunity of calling us into Your ministry. To be your servant is like an oasis of blessing, strength, and protection as we desire to serve You more. Help us to remain in You serving, until our last breath…

GENESIS 48
MANASSEH AND EPHRAIM

Scripture: Genesis 48:15-16
15 Then he blessed Joseph and said, “May the God before whom my fathers, Abraham and Isaac walked faithfully, the God who has been my shepherd all my life to this day, 16 the Angel who has delivered me from all harm —may he bless these boys. May they be called by my name and the names of my fathers Abraham and Isaac, and may they increase greatly on the earth.”

Observation:
All true believers are blessed at their death, but all do not depart equally full of spiritual comforts. Jacob adopted Joseph's two sons. He didn’t let them not succeed their father, in his power and splendor in Egypt; but let them succeed in the inheritance of the promise made to Abraham. Thus, the aged dying father teaches these young persons to take their lot with the people of God. He appoints each of them to be the head of a tribe. Those are worthy of double honor, who, through God's grace, break through the temptations of worldly wealth and promotion, to embrace religion in disgrace and poverty. Jacob will have Ephraim and Manasseh to know, that it is better to be low, than high.

Application:
God, in bestowing blessings upon his people, gives more to some than to others, more gifts, graces, and comforts, and more of the good things of this life. He often gives most to those that are least likely. He chooses the weak things of the world; he raises the poor out of the dust. Grace observes not the order of nature, nor does God prefer those whom we think fittest to be favored, but as it pleases him. How poor are they who have no riches but those of this world! How miserable is a death-bed to those who have no well-grounded hope of good, but terrible fears of evil, and nothing but evil? Brethren, always value the faith that you have now in the Lord, for this will lead you into God’s perfect plan and will in your life that this world cannot give.

Prayer:
Lord, we have always been grateful for Your great love for us which reminds us that we are too precious in You. You do not want us to be miserable, that we may be of good courage and hope. You want us to enjoy the blessings and favor you have bestowed in us each day. We continuously submit to Your authority as you lead us into Your greater plan for our lives…

12/03/2021

Every day, we are faced with the aggravating condition of the world and of humanity. We can see in the news the horrible deeds that people do just to satisfy their corrupt desires, even to the point of trampling other people’s rights and dignity or using other people for their own personal agenda. Aside from this moral degeneration, let us also not discount the tangible and undeniable sufferings of practically every person living on this planet because of the COVID-19 pandemic and its resulting effects on businesses and world economies.

The problems we are facing are indeed real. But as real as these problems is the Word of God. And as people enlightened and changed by the Word of God, it is our moral duty to share His Word to the world. Let us be bold in sharing the life-giving and life-changing words of the Lord. We cannot just complain of the evils of the world if we are not sharing the Good News of salvation to them. And we also ought to be beacons of hope to everyone who is disheartened and discouraged by this pandemic.

The Lord is good and faithful. As we share His Word, we can be assured that we will be the first to be changed and encouraged by the message that we preach. “For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” (Hebrews 4:12, NKJV)

So receive the blessings and bounties of God’s Word! Receive His fresh revelations and impartations! Receive the refreshing and restoring power of God! Shalom! Shalom!

GENESIS 47
JOSEPH AND THE FAMINE

Scripture: Genesis 47:18-19
“When that year was over, they came to him the following year and said, “We cannot hide from our lord the fact that since our money is gone and our livestock belongs to you, there is nothing left for our lord except our bodies and our land. Why should we perish before your eyes—we and our land as well? Buy us and our land in exchange for food, and we with our land will be in bo***ge to Pharaoh. Give us seed so that we may live and not die, and that the land may not become desolate.””

Observation:
The Egyptians had run out of food, money, and livestock and the only thing left that they had was their land and their bodies. To continue living they needed to sell both of these to get enough food to live. If these same people would have prepared, as Joseph had prepared Egypt for the famine, these same people would not have had to sell everything and become Pharoah's servants.

Application:
We do not differ in experience with what Joseph’s family had experienced in the old testament. Now, we are suffering the effects of this pandemic. Millions lost their jobs as several establishments have closed. Nations need a huge amount to purchase the vaccines. We are in an uncertain time where everyone must secure himself and his family. But there is one thing that is emphasized in our main text, Joseph’s character. The Lord favored his life because he fears Him despite the difficulties he experienced. The Lord is after our character-Christlike Character. Even if we are in these trying times, compromising to the pleasure of this world is not the remedy to secure ourselves. We need to revere God as He deserves to be served and worshipped. And God will remember us in times of famine.

Prayer:
Almighty Father in heaven, thank you for reminding us once again that despite difficulties, You assure us with your divine provision and protection. May we assure You as well, that as your followers, our reverence in You remains so as our faith. Continue to lead us through Your Holy Spirit as Your knowledge and wisdom continuously equip us to be more dedicated and committed Christians…in Jesus’ name. Amen.

GENESIS 46
JACOB GOES TO EGYPT

Scripture: Genesis 46:2-4
2 And God spoke to Israel in a vision at night and said, “Jacob! Jacob!” “Here I am,” he replied. 3 “I am God, the God of your father,” he said. “Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt, for I will make you into a great nation there. 4 I will go down to Egypt with you, and I will surely bring you back again. And Joseph’s own hand will close your eyes.”

Observation:
God is doing something specific in this event in a “salvation-historic” sense. He is setting up a grand scene through which He will display His glory in saving His covenant people from Egypt. This can be seen in His promise to bring Israel back out of Egypt again (vs. 3-4). Further, God won’t abandon His people. God is moving history to the next point in which more shadows and types will be set up to point to Jesus Christ as the Messiah.

Application:
This scenario is parallel to the Christian life today, as Israel goes from a land of famine to the verdant land of Goshen. We can step out in full faith, assurance, and confidence in what God has called us to do, namely, repent and believe in Christ, knowing that His strong arm will bring His covenant people from this broken and fallen world to be in the most lushed imaginable land. Through Jesus’ perfect life, His death on the cross, and powerful resurrection we can have hope that Jesus will bring us to the verdant land that Goshen only foreshadowed, that the Promised Land was only a dim reflection of Heaven. The “city that has foundations, whose designer and builder is God.” (Hebrews 11:10) My dear brethren, let us endure the uncertainty of time through the hope and strength of our certain Lord, Jesus Christ. He sees and knows what you are struggling with right now, just call unto Him and He will always be there for you.

Prayer:
Lord, sorry if there were times that we became worried about anything especially in these times, where fear drives us to paralyze our faith instead of trusting and depending on You alone. Fill us with Your hope, knowledge, and wisdom so we could still be standing firm in faith as our surroundings try to weaken us with negativism. Give us the willpower to claim and declare Your words and promises with deeper faith and courage as our heart desires to serve You more amidst uncertainty…

GENESIS 45

Scripture: Genesis 45:8 ERV
“It was not your fault that I was sent here. It was God’s plan. God made me like a father to Pharaoh. I am the governor over all his house and over all Egypt.”

Observation:
Joseph could not contain his emotions and finally told them the truth. Seeing how Judah and the others are reacting, Joseph reassures them of his forgiveness (vv. 4–8). Joseph’s words are some of the most important and extensive in all of Scripture on the relationship between divine sovereignty and human responsibility. He refers to the Lord’s activity and intent in his travails, affirming his belief in God’s providential governing of history. In reality, his confidence in the Creator’s sovereignty is one factor enabling Joseph to forgive his brothers. In hindsight, he can see God’s invisible hand; thus, there is no place for revenge since Joseph knows the Lord used his years of suffering for His good, redemptive plan (v. 5). God used the wicked act of his brothers to advance His will, despite their ignorance.

Application:
God’s sovereignty is so encompassing that Joseph can even tell his brothers: “It was not you who sent me here, but God” (v. 8). We must be careful here to note that the brothers are still liable for their sin, as Joseph later reminds them of their evil intent (50:20). All Joseph means to say is that the Lord’s will — not man’s — is ultimate. In all that occurs, God is at work to make His desires for creation go according to His plan.

A picture of Christ is seen in the love and forgiveness Joseph extends to his brothers. Jesus expects that same kind of love from each of us: "By this, all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” (John 13:35). Joseph held no grudge; instead he gave generously to his brothers and sent them off telling them not to quarrel or be troubled. Jesus sends us off with the same command: to love one another, and to be forgiving.

Prayer:
What a wonderful gift You have given us Father! Just as Joseph's life must have seemed like a failure to those around him, Jesus' death must have seemed like a failure to His disciples, yet in both cases You turned what was bad into something great! Joseph was used by You to save the people of his time from the famine, and Jesus saved us from eternal damnation by taking our place on the cross. Thank You Lord for this most magnificent gift! Let us never forget what a huge sacrifice was made for us. In Christ Jesus' name I pray, Amen.
