Meet Atabey, the Taino Universal Mother. Her pronouns are (she/her). She is considered to be the universal Mother for having birthed the zemi Yokahú (Sky Father and Lord of the Yuca) and having the power to control all the waters of the world (be it rivers, lakes or oceans). She’s designed after our beautiful darker skinned Taino femmes and she’s also the tallest character of the Ku Hura tribe. On her chest you can see two red to***co flowers, a sacred plant to us Taino and many other Indigenous and Native American tribes. She has as a skirt a yuca leaf and on her hand she holds an enlarged arrowroot leaf, another sacred plant used for medicine. On top of her head she has a couple of stamen surrounded by her voluminous green hair. For more information on this loving and powerful zemí, check out her merch in our website!

Meet Opia, the Antillean fruit-eating bat🦇. He's a deceased ancestor of Kuya and Nhakia and his pronouns are (he/him). During the day, he's pretty much sleeping and resting up his energy but at night he comes alive and wakes up extremely hungry for his favorite fruit, guava! The symbol he has on his belly is a ceramic plate Nhakia made of him after Opia and they became friends. He liked it so much that he keeps it on his belly for everyone to see.

Meet Kuya the "waribo"🏹, her pronouns are (she/they) • Swipe to the last pics to see the Taino artifacts that inspired their necklace!
Kuya’s name means "star"⭐️ in the Taino language. As a waribo (warrior), Kuya is a highly skilled huntress and she's also an extremely proficient archer. She's considered the fiercest warrior of her tribe and thus earned her tribe’s jaguar claw necklace. With this necklace, she’s empowered by the spirit of the jaguar and her hunter skills are greatly heightened. Not only is she the best warrior of her tribe, they’re also the mother of Nhakia!

Meet Nhakia the “naguagokio”! Their pronouns are (they/them) and they are the 2Spirit character of Ku Hura’s tribe. Naguagokio is the Taino word used to refer to a person born male at birth that uses female regalia, in this case the “nagua”. The “nagua” is a piece of cloth used by Taino femmes that were betrothed or married. The fact that we still have record of said word is just one of the many evidences we have that prove the queerness and inclusivity of the Taino people!

Say it with me: “Taino people are NOT extinct”. ✊🏾
When will we finally have a movement to remove all colonizer statues in Boriquen? To be a Taino on the island is to see people all around the world taking photos of themselves with these colonizer statues, blindly idolizing them. To mention a few, the one in the photo is a Christopher Colombus statue located in Old San Juan, there is another colonizer statue of Juan Ponce de León in Old San Juan as well and a ginormous statue taller than the statue of liberty located in Arecibo. These statues are EVERYWHERE on the islands. They are “set in stone” reminders of our racist, colonized history. We do not need to keep idolizing these ra**st, racist, transphobic/homophobic, colonizing monsters.
