According to the WHO, Substance abuse refers to the harmful or hazardous use of psychoactive substances, including alcohol and illicit drugs.
Globally, the harmful use of alcohol alone has been estimated to result in 3.3 million deaths each year and at least 15.3 million persons worldwide have been documented to be suffering from drug use disorders.

CAUSES OF SUBSTANCE ABUSE AMONG YOUTHS
Many factors have been identified to be responsible for drug abuse among young people, these include:
Experimental curiosity
Peer pressure
Poor socio-economic condition at homes
Need for extra energy for daily activities among others, e.t.c.

How substance abuse affects the society and physical/mental health
Substance abuse is now a major Public Health challenge all over the world.
Complications of substance abuse by young people are grave, including:
-increased odds of engaging in risky sexual behaviour,
-personality disorders,
-sexual violence,
-criminal tendencies and
-drug dependence among others.

Intervention and help available for overcoming substance abuse
According to the study, while in treatment, counselling followed by detoxification are the main interventions high-risk drug users receive.
Other interventions, such as relapse prevention or social rehabilitation, have been reported by a smaller proportion of drug users while in treatment.

As reported by the United Nations office on drug and crime, it was discovered from a study that nearly 40% of high-risk drug users reported that they had wanted help or treatment for their drug problems, but were unable to get it. The most common reasons for not accessing drug treatment cited were:
-the cost of the treatment,
-the stigma attached to drug use,
-that drug treatment services were not available,
-or that there was no information available about the local drug treatment services.
These are factors that need to be addressed in our walk towards a substance free world

Psychosis is a mental disorder characterised by a disconnection from reality. It affects the way the brain processes information. It causes one to lose touch with reality. One might see, hear, or believe things that aren’t real.

Symptoms of Psychosis
Psychosis doesn’t suddenly start. It usually follows this pattern:
Warning signs before psychosis: It starts with gradual changes in the way one thinks about and understand the world. One may notice:
A drop in grades or job performance
Trouble thinking clearly or concentrating
Suspiciousness or unease around others
Lack of self-care or hygiene
Spending more time alone than usual
Stronger emotions than situations call for
No emotions at all

Signs of early psychosis include:
Hear, see, or taste things others don’t (Hallucinations)
Hang on to unusual beliefs or thoughts no matter what others say (Delusions)
Pull away from family and friends
Not taking care of oneself
Not be able to think clearly or pay attention

Causes of Psychosis
Doctors don’t know exactly what causes psychosis, but some known risk factors include:
Genetics: You can have the genes for it, but that doesn’t always mean you’ll get psychosis.
Drugs: Triggers include some prescription medications and abuse of alcohol or drugs like ma*****na, L*D, and amphetamines.
Trauma: The death of a loved one, a sexual assault, or war can lead to psychosis. The type of trauma and the age you were when it happened also play a role.
Injuries and illnesses: Traumatic brain injuries, brain tumors, strokes, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, and HIV can all bring on psychosis.
Psychosis can also be a symptom of a mental illness, like schizophrenia or bipolar disorder.

Depression is a mood disorder that causes a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest. Also called Major Depressive Disorder or Clinical Depression, it affects how one feels, thinks and behaves, and can lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems.

Symptoms of Depression
Symptoms occur most of the day and nearly every day, and may include:
Feelings of sadness, tearfulness, emptiness or hopelessness
Angry outbursts, irritability or frustration, even over small matters
Loss of interest or pleasure in most or all normal activities, such as hobbies
Sleep disturbances, including insomnia or sleeping too much
Tiredness and lack of energy, so even small tasks take extra effort
Reduced appetite and weight loss or increased cravings for food and weight gain
Anxiety, agitation or restlessness
Slowed thinking, speaking or body movements
Feelings of worthlessness or guilt, fixating on past failures or self-blame
Trouble thinking, concentrating, making decisions and remembering things
Frequent or recurrent thoughts of death, suicidal thoughts, su***de attempts or su***de
Unexplained physical problems, such as back pain or headaches
For many people with depression, symptoms usually are severe.

Causes/Risk Factors
Depression can affect anyone—even a person who appears to live in relatively ideal circumstances.
Several factors can play a role in depression:
Biochemistry: Differences in certain chemicals in the brain may contribute to symptoms of depression.
Genetics: Depression can run in families. For example, if one identical twin has depression, the other has a 70 percent chance of having the illness sometime in life.
Personality: People with low self-esteem, who are easily overwhelmed by stress, or who are generally pessimistic appear to be more likely to experience depression.
Environmental factors: Continuous exposure to violence, neglect, abuse or poverty may make some people more vulnerable to depression.

Autism, also called Autism spectrum disorder (ASD), is a developmental disability that can cause significant social, communication and behavioral challenges. ASD symptoms ranges from mild to severe.

DIAGNOSIS OF ASD
Several conditions of ASD are diagnosed separately as Autistic disorder, Pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS), and Asperger syndrome. These conditions are now all called Autism Spectrum Disorder.
ASD can be detected at 18 months or younger. By age 2, a diagnosis by an experienced professional can be considered very reliable. However, many children do not receive a final diagnosis until much older. This delay means that children with ASD might not get the early help they need.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF ASD
People with ASD often have problems with social, emotional, and communication skills. These can be summarized under 4 categories; Social Symptoms, Communication Symptoms, Unusual interests and Behaviours and Other Symptoms.

Social symptoms e.g does not respond to name by 12 months of age, avoids eye-contact, prefers to play alone, does not share interests with others, avoids or resists physical contact, etc

Communication Symptoms: Some people can speak well, Others can’t speak at all or only very little. About 40% of children with an ASD do not talk at all. About 25%–30% of children with ASD have some words at 12 to 18 months of age and then lose them.

Unusual Interests and Behaviours e g. very organized, gets upset by minor changes to routines, has obsessive interests, etc

Other Symptoms include hyperactivity (very active), impulsivity (acting without thinking), short attention span, etc

MANAGEMENT AND TREATMENT
There is currently no cure for ASD. However, research shows that early intervention treatment services can improve a child’s development. Treatments include behavior and communication therapies, skills training and medicines to control symptoms.
