When hikers found a man experiencing a heart attack in the middle of a trail on Mica Peak last year, rescue crews with Fire District 8 were quick to respond. Typically, the rough terrain would make it difficult to reach someone in need of help- not this time. Thanks to a grant from the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation, firefighters and EMT’s used a new Polaris Ranger UTV to reach the man within a matter of minutes. The UTV also made it possible for emergency responders to perform CPR while en route to a nearby helicopter, waiting to airlift the man to a nearby hospital.

“We could not have done those compressions while carrying the man. It’s one of the benefits of the UTV- to perform those lifesaving measures,” said Lonnie Rash, Spokane County Fire District 8 Assistant Fire Chief.

The department applied for a grant from the foundation and were thrilled to receive $16,440 to purchase the new UTV.

“It’s amazing all the good work Firehouse Subs do, and they do it quietly,” said Lonnie

Fire District 8 covers miles of trails and open wilderness, including popular hiking spots such as Iller Creek. In a life-threatening emergency, accessing patients as soon as possible means the difference between life and death.

“Overall, the UTV ensures more rapid access to patients in those areas who need care,” said Lonnie.

Every time you purchase Firehouse Subs, a portion of that helps provide lifesaving equipment to fire departments across the country. Since 2005, the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation has granted over $48 million to provide equipment, training, and support to hometown heroes.
